WORLD RELIGIONS LEADERS AND MAJOR BELIEFS Holi- Spring Hindu Festival

BUDDHISM Founding leader -Prince Siddhartha Gautama / Buddha. (Buddhists believe the Buddha saw the truth about the world as it was. ) They have no specific Sabbath. but they do worship in temples and shrines. Their Holy Book is the Sutras. Place of Worship- Temples and Shrines *Buddhists’ central beliefs: 1. Eight-Fold Path and 4 Noble Truths Dharma- “Duty” (The teachings of the Buddha and the Eight Fold Path) 2. Believe you must give up worldly possessions. 3. Strive to reach Nirvana- place a blessed peace And happiness. 4. Holy Book- Sutras 5. Believe in reincarnation 6. Meditate

HINDUISM Is not considered to have any founding leaders. Not considered to have a Sabbath day (worship in homes or temple). Major belief #1- There are many gods in Hinduism. Belief in Brahman (Unites the world), Shiva and Vishnu (most important gods and goddesses). Major belief #2- Sacred texts are the Vedas and the Bhagavad-Gita. Major belief #3- Major belief #3- Believe in reincarnation and Caste System.

JUDAISM Founding Leader- Abraham is considered the founding leader of Judaism. Sabbath- Saturday Holy Book is the Bible-Old Testament Leader- Rabbi Worship in a Synagogue. Major belief #1- One of the oldest monotheistic religions. Major belief #2- All powerful God, who created the universe. Major belief #2- Rosh Hashanah- Jewish New Year which commemorates the creation of the world. Major belief #3- Hanukkah- Jewish Festival of Light

CHRISTIANITY Founding leader- Jesus Christ Sabbath- Sunday Holy Book is the Bible- Old and New Testament. Leader- Priest or Minister Place of Worship- Church Major belief #1- Believe there is one God, who created the Universe and all that is in it. Believe that God is active in guiding and teaching his people. Major Belief #2- Believe that Jesus Christ was the Savior and are the Son of God. Major belief #3- Easter and Christmas are the major Holidays.

ISLAM Muhammad - founding leader of Islam. Sabbath- Friday Holy Book- Koran Place of Worship- Mosque Major Beliefs Believe there is only one God, Allah, who is the sovereign ruler of the universe. 4 important beliefs 1. Followers are called Muslims. 2.Believe in pilgrimage to Mecca at least Once in a person’s life.. 3. Pray 5 times a day toward Mecca.
