Who lives in a house like this?

Judaism at home L/O:  To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home  To understand what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people

Lesson outcomes Unscramble the kosher foods Discuss with a partner thoughts on why it is important for Jewish people to keep kosher Reflect on whether keeping kosher is difficult Correctly identify kosher and treyfah menus Create a kosher menu Write a paragraph on how to recognise a Jewish home using keywords Peer assess a partners work

The Jewish Home The way in which the Jewish family dress, eat and live are important parts of their faith. In today’s lesson we are going to look at how you would recognise a Jewish home by the different artefacts in it and the way it is designed and investigate the foods that are allowed and are NOT allowed to be eaten by Jewish people…..

Hanukiah This is a hanukiah. It is a candlestick with eight main branches and one ‘servant’ branch. It is used in the Jewish home during the special festival of Hanukah L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Mezuzah This is a mezuzah. It is a metal or wooden casing which contains a tiny scroll of the Torah (sacred texts in Judaism) It is attached to every doorpost of a Jewish home (except the bathrooms and toilet). When a person enters or exits the room they touch the mezuzah to remind them that God is present in the house L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Kosher kitchen This is a typical Jewish kitchen. What do you notice about it? Why do think there are separate dishwashers? L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Kosher kitchen There are not just separate dishwashers in a kosher kitchen. There are also separate fridges, cookers, preparation areas and sinks. Why do you think this is? L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Kosher kitchen It is because there are certain foods that Jewish people are not permitted to mix together. L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Kosher food The law says that meat and dairy products cannot be eaten together. It is written like this in the Torah: “You shall not boil a kid in it’s mothers milk”. So, for example, butter will not be used in a beef sandwich, nor will milk or a cream sauce be poured over chicken! L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

Kosher food Jewish people will usually wait three hours before ‘mixing’ dairy with meat. So a pudding with custard or cream or a coffee with milk would not follow a meat course. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

Kosher kitchen Foods that are allowed are called ‘kosher’. To be classed as ‘kosher’ the food must be prepared in a certain way. There is a list of food in the book of Leviticus (one of the first five books of the Old Testament) in which God gives instructions to His people on what they are and are NOT allowed to eat. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people

Test yourself! What is a mezuzah? How many branches does a hanukiah have? What is the food called that is ‘allowed’? L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Kosher food L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

Kosher foods All plants are kosher, but not all fish and animals are. “Animals which chew the cud and have hooves which are split” ARE allowed (cows and sheep) Animals that do NOT (pigs and rabbits) are TREYFAH This is the word for ‘opposite of kosher’) Fish are allowed if they have fins and scales but shellfish are not allowed. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

Can you name all the kosher foods? Unscramble the letters to make a list of the animals that ARE allowed rkutyeshiftogackihenc kudcwocpeesh L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

FORBIDDEN! You are now going to see some pictures of animals which are forbidden. They will appear and disappear very quickly. See how many you can remember! How many did you get?!

Kosher food Any animal which is to be eaten has to be killed in a certain way. Before being cooked, the meat is soaked in cold water and sprinkled with salt. This removes all the blood from it. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people

Kosher food For Jews, preparing food carefully and eating it correctly are ways of worshipping God, because God has given them the food and instructions on what to eat and what NOT to eat. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people

Reflecting time Why is it important that Jewish people prepare and eat food correctly? Discuss with a partner and write down your thoughts Do you thinking ‘keeping kosher’ would be difficult? Give reasons for your answer. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people

Kosher or Treyfah? Starter Oysters with a creamy sauce Main Beef with potatoes and peas Dessert Apple crumble with custard Starter Leek and potato soup Main Chicken with a cheese sauce and broccoli Dessert Strawberry ice-cream Starter Cheese and bacon potato skins Main Rabbit steak with red wine sauce and mashed potatoes Dessert Rice pudding Starter Tomato soup Main Roast turkey with peas, carrots and new potatoes Dessert Fruit salad Starter Garlic mushrooms Main Fish, chips and mushy peas Dessert Lemon sorbet L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

Design a kosher menu! Now, YOU must design a kosher menu! Can you remember all the rules? You CAN’T copy anything from the other menu’s. Get your Chef’s thinking hat on! My Kosher menu Starter Main Dessert L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

How to recognise a Jewish home Now you must write a paragraph in your book on how you would recognise a Jewish home. What would you see there? What might you see people doing in one? Try to use these words: Mezuzahtouchdoorposts Kitchenkoshertwo Hanukiahcandlestickfestivals L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

Swap books! You are now going to read and assess your partners’ work: Have they included the key words? Have they clearly explained what you would see in a Jewish home? Have they shown an understanding of why these things are important? 2 stars: 2 things you like about your partners’ work A wish: 1 thing you would have liked to see in their work

Gimme 5! On a new page of your exercise book, draw around your hand. In each finger and the thumb write one new thing you have learnt today

Lesson objectives Can we:  Recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home? Have we:  Understood what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jewish people? Lesson outcomes Have you: Unscrambled the kosher foods? Discussed with a partner thoughts on why it is important for Jewish people to keep kosher? Reflected on whether keeping kosher is difficult? Correctly identified kosher and treyfah menus? Created a kosher menu? Written a paragraph on how to recognise a Jewish home using keywords? Peer assessed a partners work?
