 Please quietly retrieve your journals and take your seats. Respond thoughtfully to the questions in complete sentences. If you have more time than you think you need, review your responses and expand your answers. There are no wrong answers, but your thoughts will be shared in class today.  EQ’s  1.What do you think are the reasons behind discrimination and prejudice in our society?  2.Provide an example of someone discriminating against someone else or feeling prejudiced against someone. How would you have felt or responded if the victim had been you or someone you loved?

 Review your responses with your shoulder partner and review your own; revise your journal entry if you feel your views have changed. Leave the original opinion where it is and place the revised thought underneath.  You will have roughly 10 minutes to share.

 For this project, you will choose 5 images to represent something that reflects your definition of beauty and make a collage.  Once your collage is complete, you will turn it over and write 3-5 sentences for each image explaining why/how the item accurately represents your definition.  This assignment is an individual assignment only; There should be a voice level of ZERO.  You may listen to your own music, but it must be for your ears only and be put away when your time for this project is up.

 1.Why do you think is the reasoning behind discrimination and prejudice in our society?  2.Provide an example of someone discriminating against someone else or feeling prejudiced against someone. How would you have felt or responded if the victim had been you or someone you loved?  3.What is your definition of beauty?  4.Why do you think the perceptions of what is beautiful vary so widely?  5.How do you think our perceptions of beauty limit us in terms of accepting individuals who do not fit our definition of beautiful?

In the beginning was the darkness, and in the darkness was a girl, and in the girl was a secret… In the domed city of Yuan, the blind Princess Isra, a Smooth Skin, is raised to be a human sacrifice whose death will ensure her city’s vitality. In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, known as the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to their worlds. Isra wants to help the city’s Banished people, second- class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan’s enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe. As secrets are revealed and Isra’s sight, which vanished during her childhood, returns, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love.

 Be prepared to begin reading Of Beast and Beauty in class tomorrow  Bring a pencil/pen for note-taking  Eat a healthy breakfast and get plenty of sleep  Before you go…  Clean up the area around your desk of any debris.  Sit and wait quietly for ME to dismiss you, not the bell, please.  Have a wonderful rest of the day
