How did President Monroe react to European interest in the Americas? He issued the Monroe Doctrine

Describe the purpose of the Monroe Doctrine. The purpose was to protect American lands from future European colonization

How was Andrew Jackson different from other Presidents? He was from a poor pioneer family

What did Andrew Jackson’s political party encourage? They encouraged the “common man” to vote

What happen when settlers began to claim Indian lands in the Southeast? The Indian Removal Act was passed

What was an effect of the Indian Removal Act Indians were forced off their traditional homelands.

How were tools and cloth made before the Industrial Revolution? By hand

What effect did machines have on Americans? Goods were produced more quickly and cheaply

Compare and contrast suffrage in the eastern and western states in the early 1800s. Eastern states granted suffrage to only white men who owned property. States farther west granted suffrage to all white men.

Why were slaves needed to grow and pick more cotton after the cotton gin was invented? The factories needed more raw cotton to make into cloth. More slaves were needed to grow and pick cotton because the demand for cotton increased

Why did railroads replace water routes as the preferred way to travel? The railroads were faster cheaper and more comfortable. People could also travel to places that they could not get to by water.

Who benefitted from the Industrial Revolution? Everyone involved in making goods by machine benefitted. Machines helped businesses make more goods at a cheaper cost. This allowed the businesses to make more products, earn more money, and hired more people, who could then buy the goods with the money they earned.
