Refer to words when you teach or when you want learners to write paragraph etc. Display / exhibit learners work; this encourages them to work and participate in activities.

Lesson plans are thorough and signed, dated and stamped by relevant responsible party. Do learners have necessary stationary? Do they all have note books? Does each learner have a textbook? Are you using DBE workbooks? Is there enough for each learner

Assessment programmes are found in the CAPS documents P70-72/ (SBA) Gives the total amount of assessments that should be done per term The minimum mark allocation is given – you are allowed to exceed this.

Learner books have evidence or work covered. Pace & sequence of work is appropriate for CAPS. Evidence of Informal Assessments that informs Formal Assessments. Evidence of Formal Assessments Evidence of practical work / hands-on activities. Evidence of homework. Learner books are checked regularly – marked; signed & dated.

Teach according to curriculum – Use CAPS document as guide not text book. Include hands on / practical activity to teach concepts. Avoid teaching from the textbook or use the textbook as basis for presentation. Use a variety of textbooks as resource. Use the school environment to your advantage. Are learners exposed to regular practical work. Use variety of strategies / LTSM / ITC/etc Do you include writing and drawing activities. Science investigation skills;Technology process- and map skills are reflected in lesson. Literacy and Numeracy is promoted – correct measurement; reading styles (BLA); etc. Try to include extraordinary activities like experiments / magazine articles / photos/ etc ; to encourage learners to be interested in the subject.

Regular monitoring of the following must occur: Teachers’ Portfolio - once a term Learner note / exercise books – 10% once a term Lesson preparation – weekly or biweekly. Who will do the monitoring? This varies from school to school. Can be any of the following people: principal; deputy; HOD; subject head A written report with recommendations is preferred, but a signature, date and stamp is also acceptable.

All Formal Assessment tasks (projects, practicals, assignments, tests. Examinations) MUST go through a rigorous pre moderation process. During moderation process rubrics and memoranda should be available. Who will do the moderation? This varies from school to school. Can be any of the following people: principal; deputy; HOD; subject head After assessments are completed, 10% of all FATS must go through a post moderation process.

Occur two to three weeks before assessments are done. Written reports must be given by moderator to rectify errors. Teachers should adhere to the recommendations given. The pre-moderation process consists of the following:  Cover page with following information – School name; subject; grade; date; mark- & time allocation; learner name.  Unbiased instructions using the correct subject terminology.  Clear pictures / images that will not darken or lighten when photocopied. Use different images in FATS than used in class room.  Font should be grade appropriate.  Each page should be numbered in the bottom right hand corner.  There should be a relation between time & mark allocation.  Appropriate mark allocation for each question.  Include cognitive levels as prescribed by CAPS.  Tests / Examinations should contain a variety of question types; including text based and translation activities.

POST MODERATION 1: Consists of : Moderation of correct script marking according to memorandum or rubric. This is done before marks are recorded. If more then one teacher is responsible for one subject, make sure that all have a good understanding of and interpretation of the memo. After marking, submit 10% of scripts/tasks for moderation. Submission of scripts should be rotational for this process. POST MODERATION 2: 10% of scripts together with mark list / recording sheets submitted to check for correct transfer of marks obtained. Also check that code allocated reflects the percentage obtained. Mark sheets should now be signed off by relevant parties.
