Tips for ID I. Tropical, Temperate or Arctic (polar)? Tropical = temp does not vary much, always warm Has a rainy and dry season Temperate = temp varies, only 1 or two months avg. below freezing Arctic, polar, cold, taiga = temp varies, many months spent below freezing II. Desert, Grassland or Forest? Deserts average 1 or less inches of rainfall per month Grasslands average 2-3 inches of rainfall per month Forests average 4+ inches of rainfall per month In polar climates, the precip. averages less

Other tricks… Chaparral and Temperate Grassland look similar Chaparral has precip. in winter Temp Grassland has precip. in summer Temp Grassland and Taiga can look similar Taiga has several months below freezing Temp Grassland has 1-2 months below freezing Polar Grassland (Arctic Tundra) and Cold Desert look similar Polar Grassland has most months below freezing Cold Desert spends less then half the year below freezing Polar Grassland has a small rise in precip. in summer. Cold Desert is consistently dry

Answers 1- Taiga (Coniferous Forest) 2- Tropical Desert 3- Temperate (Deciduous) Forest 4- Temperate Desert 5- Temperate Grassland (Prairie) 6- Tropical Grassland (Savanna) 7- Chaparral (Scrub) 8- Tropical (Rain) Forest 9- Cold Desert 10- Arctic Tundra (Polar Grassland)
