1 SWBAT define biome and give examples of what makes them unique.
Bell ringer Based on this map, what biomes are common in the United States?

2 Biomes

3 What is a biome? A biome is a large area of similar climate (temperature and rainfall) and vegetation

4 Examples of biomes Land: Water: Tundra Ocean Taiga Fresh water
Deciduous forest Estuaries Tropical rainforest Grasslands Desert

5 Tundra

6 Tundra Climate Average temperature -18˚F
Average precipitation inches Ground is permanently frozen below 10 inches Short summer growing season with temperatures to 54˚F

7 Tundra vegetation No trees: most common vegetation is moss and lichen

8 Tundra animals

9 Taiga (coniferous forest)

10 Taiga climate Long severe winter and short summer
Winter temp: -65˚F to 30˚F Summer temp: 20˚F to 70˚F Average precipitation 15-20”

11 Taiga vegetation Coniferous (evergreen) forest

12 Taiga animals

13 Temperate deciduous forest

14 Deciduous forest climate
Average annual temperature 50˚F Four distinct seasons Average rainfall 30-60”

15 Deciduous forest vegetation
Deciduous trees—trees that lose their leaves in the winter Shrubs and flowering plants

16 Decidous forest animals

17 Tropical rainforest

18 Tropical rainforest climate
Temperature range 68˚F to 86˚F Annual rainfall over 80” Very humid

19 Rainforest vegetation
More than half the world’s plants Layers: canopy, understory, forest floor

20 Rainforest animals More than half the species in the world live in the rainforest

21 Grasslands

22 Grasslands climate Temperature has large range: -40˚F to 90˚F
Rainy season and dry season 10-30” rain in temperate grasslands; 25-60” in tropical grasslands

23 Grasslands vegetation
Not enough moisture for more than a handful of trees

24 Grasslands Animals

25 Desert

26 Desert climate Day-night temperature extremes
Ave. daytime temp 100˚F, ave. nighttime temp below 50˚F Less than 10” rainfall a year

27 Desert vegetation Sparse, specially adapted plants

28 Adaptation An adaptation is an inherited characteristic that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.

29 Example of climatograph
