Single-Phase ProtoDUNE Construction Planning Jim Stewart LBNC January 11, 2016

Outline Detector Overview Integration Planning Schedule, Milestones, and Goals Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE2

The ProtoDUNE SP Detector Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE Six anode plane assemblies (APA)  3 APAs on each side U,V,X readout planes Wrapped geometry Cold Electronics 2560 readout channels per APA (15,360 total) Central cathode plane  -180 kV nominal Field Cage for field shaping  shaped profiles / G-10 I-Beam  Constructed in panels Ground Plane Ground Planes Cathode Planes Field Cage Anode Planes 3

Anode Plane Assemblies (APA) Prototype Full-Scale Stn. Stl. Frame is constructed  Frame for test winding Spring Focus is now on the winding machine design.  Design is nearing completion  Prototype winder available in Spring Manufacturing prototyping through summer Start manufacture of first APA in September.  Plan 1/6 test assembly at PSL winter/spring 6mx2.3m active area Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE4 UK has applied for funding for ½ the APAs

Field Cage Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE5 Field Cage design progressing  Proof of concept setup build and tested at CERN Test plastic end cap concept Operated at 100kV with 6cm gap (~300kV) dirty Ar Next step to fruther develop the installation and interfaces Will build Mockups soon Construct prototypes this year Design review in Fall Start construction this year CERN test Setup

Field Cage Elements Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE6

Cathode Plane Design still conceptual  G-10 Hanger brackets  ¼ inch resistive coated plate  Resistive Kapton laminate  HV buss inside support tube Close cooperation with CERN group Hydrostatic pressure displaces thin structure  Looking at ¾ in sandwich Design review in fall Fabricate first frame elements in winter  Available for test assemblies at PSL Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE7 HV cable without shield Bulk resistive material Conductive ring Screws to connect to the CPA Pin Socket Coiled wire for cable contraction

TPC Support Cross beam support structure foreseen  Gives flexibility in installation  Trollies accommodate thermal motion  Installation through a temporary construction opening (TCO)  Vibration isolation possible Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE8 Want to add effort from U. Minn

Key Integration Activities 3D models for the detector components are integrated at BNL and then sent to CERN and integrated into the cryostat model.  All components are integrated into a single 3-D model at CERN Trial assembly of the TPC is planned at PSL or Ash River  Start with a 1/6 setup (1 APA, CPA frame, single FC panels)  Integrate second and third APA and FC as they are available  This test was critical for the 35t test A vertical slice test will be constructed to test the full readout chain of all the detector elements.  35t experience shows that this is critical and should be done as soon as possible.  Needs to include all electrical elements: TPC cold electronics, Photon electronics, Trigger electronics, all cables and feerdthrus, and the DAQ system. Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE9

Integration Presenter Name | Presentation Title10 The detector model is integrated into the cryostat model thru stp files. Placement inside the cryostat has been cross checked with the DUNE far detector parameters. A ProtoDUNE parameters spreadsheet is maintained to summarize the critical detector parameters. Models exchanged regularly. DUNE Spacing

ProtoDUNE Detector Schedule Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE11 Developed a high level schedule in consultation with managers.  Will be shown on the next slides Now updating the RLS in P6. Milestones still need work. Long shutdown starts 6mo after commissioning complete!  Very tight  Need to seek ways to accelerate the work even more.

Anode Plane Schedule Spring 2016 Design Review Winter 16/17 First APA constructed Winter 16/17 1/6 Trial Assembly Spring 17 second US and first UK APA constructed Summer 17 test assemble 1/3 detector Fall 17 Last US APA finished Spring 17 Last UK APA finished Fall 17 Ship last APA to CERN Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE12 Detector at CERN Detector Commissioned UK seeking funding for APA production Schedule assumes 3 APA from UK

Cold Electronics Schedule Spring 16 rev1 ASICS available Summer 16 Test rev1 ASIC chips Fall 16 rev2 ASICS Available Winter 16/17 electronics design review Spring 17 ASIC production run Summer/Fall 17 assembly testing of electronics boards Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE13 Detector at CERN Detector Commissioned Have tried to accelerate the CHIP revisions as much as possible. Work coordinated with SBND.

Field Cage Schedule Spring Summer 16 Design/Mockups/small scale tests Fall 16 Design review Winter16/17 First elements available for assembly tests Fall 17 FC construction complete ship to CERN Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE14

Cathode Plane Schedule Fall 2016 Design Review Winter 16/17 First CPA elements available for assembly tests Summer 17 CPA construction complete Fall 17 Ship CPA to CERN Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE15

Photon Detector Schedule 2016 Optimize photon detector design Fall 16 Design Reviews Winter/spring 16/17 Fabricate Photon detectors Fall 17 Ship PD to CERN Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE16

DAQ Schedule Winter 16/17 Support 35t test experiment Spring/Summer 16 Evaluate alternate DAQ options Fall 16 Winter 16/17 Establish vertical slice test facility Winter 16/17 Design review and procure computing Summer 17 Install DAQ hardware Fall 17 Commissioning DAQ Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE17

Scheduling Tasks – next steps The revision of the P6 schedule needs completed The milestones need agreed upon with the managers The schedule needs to be reconciled with the ENH1 and NP-02 schedules.  Some additional funds are available this year which need to be used to accelerate the schedule. The protoDUNE schedule is extremely ambitious and all efforts are needed to move as fast as possible. Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE18

Conclusions The TPC design is progressing rapidly. Design reviews of the components will take place this year. Critical path is in the APA and electronics production and integration.  Are seeking to accelerate production as much as possible. Mechanical integration is being done through exchange of 3-d models. Planning critical integration activities and seeking to accelerate this work. The integration of the far detector schedule with ProtoDUNE, ENH1 and NP-02 is a critical next step. Stewart | Single-Phase ProtoDUNE19
