Or how to keep your pay check coming Chapter 11

What is body mechanics? Body mechanics is the way the parts of the body work together when person moves. Good body mechanics is the correct positioning of the body for a given task, such as lifting a heavy object. Following the rules of good body mechanics helps save energy and prevents injury and muscle strain.( And keeps your pay check coming) Alignment (comes from word “line”)is proper positioning of the parts of the body the way it is symmetrical and properly supported.

A little bit of anatomy. Let’s start with bones Top ones – cervical (neck) ?v=aDvbAvBLQuM&feature=rel ated ?v=aDvbAvBLQuM&feature=rel ated Bottom ones – lumbar (lower back) ?v=xMnkDHqEFNU ?v=xMnkDHqEFNU

Which muscles keep us straight?

Are they strong? Can you use it for lifting heavy objects?

How hard is for the disc to keep the weight? m/watch?v=_T- eQJnZRRk m/watch?v=_T- eQJnZRRk Disc protrusion (herniated disc) m/watch?v=Bn9mcDOJ VpI m/watch?v=Bn9mcDOJ VpI

Risk factors which increase the likelihood of injury Poor posture Poor body mechanics Low level of fitness Obesity Stress, both mechanical and psychological

Best preventive practices

Use good posture during all activities

If you think that you don’t have enough time, here is an easy solution:

Stay trim by eating correctly

Reduce mental stress through good lifestyle habits m/problemsrap/

Maintain flexibility with stretching exercises

Sleep well and enough (at home, not in class ) How many hours? IDQL0&feature=related

Visit chiropractor and massage therapist if you feel strain in your back

And, of course, use a good body mechanics !

Principles of Good Body Mechanics Assess the load and get help if needed Have a wide base support – keep your feet apart Keep your back straight Face what you are lifting, don’t twist your back with turns Begin with squatting position and lift load using your legs Keep the object close to your body

So how do we learn to keep your body in good alignment and use proper body mechanics? We need to start with ballet m/watch?v=nBbuzVyQx t4 m/watch?v=nBbuzVyQx t4

Rather Push than pull Push than lift

Think before the task Plan ahead the best way to transfer, lift, and use good body mechanics Call for help if you need it Use lifting machines to prevent injury tairs/ tairs/

Positions of the body: prone and supine

Lateral position – position on a side

Fowler’s - 45 degrees

High Fowler’s – degrees

Lower Fowler's (Semi-Fowlers) – 30degrees – tube feeding position

To summarize Fowler’s positions:

Tube feeding

Sim’s position – recovery after CPR, position for enema

Reposition your patient every 2 hours or more often and check their skin!

Skin break prevention Check patient’s skin every time you reposition a patient Use draw sheet moving patient up in bed to prevent shearing ( rubbing against the sheets)

Trendelenburg position - syncope

Dangling

Bariatric patients - BMI above 30 BMI Ranges Underweight = 18.5 or less Normal weight = Overweight = Obesity = 30 or greater inicsmedServices/COE/surgic alServices/generalSurgery/ba riatricsurgery/resources/bmi _calculator.html?utm_source =google&utm_medium=cpc& utm_term=body%20mass%2 0index&utm_content=%21ac q%21v2%21s-b &utm_campaign= Grant%3A+Bariatrics&gclid= CJCd7KfZ4KsCFRM6gwodTz kmTw inicsmedServices/COE/surgic alServices/generalSurgery/ba riatricsurgery/resources/bmi _calculator.html?utm_source =google&utm_medium=cpc& utm_term=body%20mass%2 0index&utm_content=%21ac q%21v2%21s-b &utm_campaign= Grant%3A+Bariatrics&gclid= CJCd7KfZ4KsCFRM6gwodTz kmTw

Bariatric patient Use lifting machines or a lot of help lifting bariatric patient Hoyer lift

Safe use of a wheelchair When using an elevator, turn the chair around, so the resident faces the door in the elevator

Face chair backwards when go down the ramp

Make sure patient’s hips are at the very back of the chair to prevent sliding forward and fall

Geriatric (reclining) chair Is used for patients who are unable to maintain sitting position to avoid staying in bed all day

Patient with weak side Plan the move the way patient can use their strong side first

Activity ROM for knee and ankle Transferring to a bedside commode stand-and- pivet and sit-to-stand. Hoyer check off

Plan for the day: 1.Repositioning patient in a wheelchair 2. Positioning on a side 3. Changing an occupied bed 4. Transferring from the bed to the wheelchair 5. Transferring to the bedside commode anddancing/ anddancing/
