BODY MECHANICS

 The way in which the body moves and maintains balance while making the most efficient use of all of its parts  Positions and movements used to maintain proper posture and avoid muscle and bone injury

BODY MECHANICS  Body alignment---correct relationship or position of the head, back and limbs  Proper alignment  Is standing straight with abdominal muscles pulled in, shoulders back and relaxed, weight balanced equally, each foot aligned with the shoulders, chest and chin held up  protects ligaments and muscles  Puts less stress on muscles, prevents fatigue  Prevents muscle strain and spinal disc injury

BODY MECHANICS  Base of Support  Standing with your feet 8-10 inches a part to provide better balance  About shoulder width apart

BODY MECHANICS  Basic Rules to ALWAYS FOLLOW  Keep a board base of support  8-10inches  Bend from hips and knees, keep back straight  DO NOT bend at the waist  Use the Strongest Muscles  Use shoulders, upper arms, hips, thighs  Back muscles are weak!

BODY MECHANICS  Basic Rules to follow  Use your body weight to push or pull objects  Push, pull or slide objects when possible  Carry heavy objects close to the body  Avoid twisting  Turn your feet and entire body when changing direction  If object is to heavy to lift alone always get help  Get a co-worker or medical device to assist

BODY MECHANICS  Back Support Devices  Some facilities may require workers to wear supportive devices  These devices should be fitted correctly and snug to the body

BODY MECHANICS  Back Support  Pros  Remind worker to use good body mechanics  Cons  Provide false sense of security  Increase abdominal pressure  Should be loosened when activities are not being preformed

BODY MECHANICS  How to avoid back injury  Use proper body mechanics  Exercise  Use proper supports  Maintain a healthy diet/weight
