Body Mechanics Gabriela E Sousa

Why is it Important? Proper body mechanics for both staff and patient is important because it reduces the risk of injury Some of it may seem like its “common-sense” but not everyone follows the correct procedures and often injure themselves with simple tasks; like picking up a wallet off the ground

When Exercising Patients Always keep back straight Pull up a chair or sit on the bed next to the patient as you go through the exercise protocol with them – When doing straight leg raises, do not stand and bend over as you help lift their leg as it puts a lot of pressure through back – Instead, sit next to them and keep back erect

Chest- to- Chest with Patient When patient is not strong enough to stand and pivot to commode, chair, or bed, a “chest- to-chest” may be necessary Stand in front of patient Have patient place arms around your neck for support Squat and hug patient around lower waist In a slow and controlled manner, “un-squat” and stand with patient and pivot them

Chest to Chest with Patient

Sliding Patient Towards Pillow in Bed with Two Person Assist Sometimes, patients are unable to slide themselves up the long bed to where the pillow is Have patient lay supine with arms across chest in a self hugging manner and relax Face the bed and squat keeping back erect In one fluid motion, side-step while pulling the bed pad up towards the pillow with patient on it

Picking up Objects Step over object with both feet so object is between them to widen your base of support Squat while keeping back straight and grab object In a controlled manner, “un-squat” and gently stand back up by lifting with leg muscles – NOT BACK NEVER bend over and pick up object as that puts a lot of force or torque through back
