The role of Teaching Schools in self improving school led system Paul Haigh Director of the Hallam Teaching School Alliance Notre Dame High School, Sheffield

Teaching Schools 500 designated now 100 more this summer 7 in Sheffield Strategic hubs at the centre of school alliances in a self improving school led education system Local solutions to local needs as well as delivering national aims in local contexts Led by NCTL (agency of the Department for Education)

How does it work Teaching Schools are outstanding schools with much to offer Set up with small seed funding and have the ‘day job’ of staying outstanding- can’t over stretch themselves- need to build capacity through their alliance of schools They can facilitate, coordinate, strategically plan, signpost and engage a community of schools truly collaborating together to improve around a shared and agreed set of strategies They have to build self sustaining businesses

Role of Teaching Schools As well as offering training and support for their alliance themselves, Teaching Schools will identify and co-ordinate expertise from their alliance, using the best leaders and teachers to: 1.play a greater role in training new entrants to the profession 2.lead peer-to-peer professional and leadership development 3.spot and nurture leadership potential 4.provide support for other schools 5. designate and broker Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) 6. engage in research and development

Types of partner Teaching School, the strategic hub of the alliance Aspirant Teaching Schools, (outstanding schools who intend to become teaching schools in their own right) Strategic Partner, schools, HEIs and other organisations who form a significant part of the ‘offer’ and are named on the plan Alliance Schools, the majority who can access the support and, where they have particular strengths, offer something to others in the community

Hallam Teaching School Alliance Operated by Notre Dame High School Reaches about 200 schools with varied levels of engagement Operate several projects as spin offs from the central designation- The Sheffield SCITT, The SY Maths Hub, The SY Science Learning Partnership, The EEF Spaced Learning Project Each has its own business plan as part of the bigger Teaching School plan
