2 Project background Use the expertise, ideas and contributions from the conference to address an issue that impacts on young people Consulted with Headteachers and other colleagues engaged in developing the conference Make best use of our extensive connections with the national and local Teaching School Network to deliver the project and disseminate outcomes Department of Teacher Education and the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research

3 Project aims Improve the achievement and attainment of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the context of the new policies for GSCE examinations Through: Considering the cognitive and emotional issues that create barriers to their demonstration of learning through examinations Identifying teaching, learning and assessment methods that might remove, mitigate or provide skills to overcome these barriers Evaluating these through small scale interventions in targeted schools Department of Teacher Education and the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research

4 Process Bring together expertise in cognitive and emotional dimensions of learning with Specialist Leaders in Education – starting at this conference and including the expertise of young people with SEN Use principles of Joint Practice Development to develop, trial and evaluate small scale interventions during 2013 Disseminate findings through the regional and national Teaching School Network and the 2014 NEEC in Nottingham Work with the Teaching Agency to identify lessons for ITT and disseminate these through the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers and the School Direct Lead School community Department of Teacher Education and the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research
