Objective SWBAT differentiate between verbal and non- verbal communication. SWBAT determine that non-verbal communication can be perceived in several different ways.

Types of Communication Verbal - Talking between two or more people Non-verbal - None or limited use of words, usually includes facial expressions, body language, gestures etc. Visual - Typically done with pictures i.e Instagram Written - Communication in text i.e text messages, , written letters, Twitter

Verbal vs Non-verbal Communication Verbal : Most common form of communication Occurs between two or more people talking Most effective when listener has feedback or response to message. Non-verbal : Info exchanged using none or limited words Includes facial expressions, hand gestures, Can be used in conjunction with verbal communication

Non-Verbal Communication Body Language- Movement or positioning of the body that express thought or feelings; i.e smiling, crying, shaking head up/down or left/right, shaking, gasping, coughing, etc. Paralanguage- vocal effects which include tone, pitch, volume, rate, etc, which may indicate a different meaning, such as sarcasm, joking, anger, sadness, confusion, etc.
