Presentation transcript:

The territory, the largest in the province, is characterized by the presence of mountains and hills, lying close to the pre- Alps that separate it from Valbelluna and dall'Alpago. In addition to the center of Vittorio Veneto, divided between Ceneda and Serravalle, there are other neighborhoods and suburbs such as San Giacomo di Veglia, Coast and Salsa. In addition there are numerous villages and towns scattered on the slopes of the mountains or in the Val Lapisina, namely the valley which, being inserted between the pre-Alps, connects with the Treviso province of Belluno through the saddle Fadalto.

Along this valley are the Dead Lake, one of the largest in the province, and the most modest of Restello Lake and Lake Negrisiola, both manmade. The minimum altitude is of Vittorio Veneto is 89 m above sea level, while the highest is 1,763 meters above sea level.

Vittorio Veneto is surrounded to the north by the forest Cansiglio, this is considered an Italian natural heritage.

Given the physical characteristics, the area of Vittorio Veneto is rich in waterways with torrential character, many of whom are born within the municipal area. The main watercourse is undoubtedly the Meschio, a tributary of Livenza, which runs through the city. There are also the Cervada, a tributary of Monticano, and Sora, a tributary of Meschio same.

Vittorio Veneto was born in 1966 with the union of the preexisting common Ceneda and Serravalle. He took the name “Vittorio” on 22 November, 1923.Beginning in the late 19° century, the new districts were created around the road linking the two towns, the current Viale della Vittoria, so that the union was also physical, and the town hall was located in the middle. Yet the city still continues to demostrate a certain bipolarity, and indeed Ceneda and Serravalle, despite the proximity, have distinct historical identities. Vittorio Veneto is the italian city that was the star on the Italian-Austrian front of the homony mous battle that ended the hostilities between the two countries at the and of the First World War.

Founded around a fortress of probable Roman origin, Serravalle was a center of secondary importance until, at the end of the eleventh century, it became a fief of the Camino. For Serravalle it began a period of steady economic development and urban planning that continued even when it became part of Venice, becoming the seat of a Podestà.

Probably of Celtic origins in Roman times Ceneda was home to perhaps a vicus associated with the fortified municipium of Oderzo. It grew in importance during the Middle Ages, becoming the seat of a Lombard duchy and of a diocese. Local bishops had also the title of counts that remained even after being subjected to the Serenissima. In the modern age its development was hampered by the growing of Serravalle, maintaining the characteristics of a small village with a rural economy gathered around the cathedral square

We have got two cathedrals dated 18° century, some churches, a lot of bars and three post offices. There are many bus stops and three bus lines. We have got two railway stations : Soffratta and one in the city centre. There are also banks and a police station, a library, some museums, a cinema ( Verdi) and a theatre. There are three markets on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. There are a lot of gardens : a Central garden and the Papadopoli park. Vittorio Veneto has got a hospital, but it hasn ‘t got an airport ; the nearest airport is in Treviso about 40 kilometres away.

In the north and in the south side of Vittorio Veneto there are the copies of the Nike of Samotracia, it is called Vittoria Alata because it represents the victory of the First World War.

In Vittorio Veneto there are many churches and in particular two cathedrals, one in Ceneda and one in Serravalle. They are dated 18° century.

Vittorio Veneto has got two castles on its hills: the Bishop’s castle in Ceneda and Castrum in Serravalle.

It has been the residence of Ceneda’s bishop for at least eight centuries. Founded in the mid VI century, it was likely to have been the residence of the longobard dukedom of Ceneda. The existing structures date back to the medieval era and are possibly of the Roman age. Destroyed during the Hungarians incursions (903), it was rebuilt by bishop A.Correr in1420, thoughout the centuries it underwent different reworkings.

The ancient village of Serravalle grows in the north of the city of Vittorio Veneto, and is, with the castle, the square and its Renaissance palaces, one of the jewels of the Venetian landscape.
