Note Taking Notes: use page numbers and quotation marks to avoid plagiarizing. Response: use your own words to write a response using the sentence starters on the back. Be thinking about your strategies by marking what they are.

Read each section. Read each section first. Go back through and pick out important quotes to take down as notes. Respond using one of the suggestions on the back, then label your strategy.

The Human Population Explosion Pg. 532: “Today we know this (an endless supply) isn’t true. Earth has a carrying capacity.” Response: Carrying capacity was confusing to me but I now know it means the absolute most the planet can handle. - C

Human Population Pg. 533: “Earth is experiencing a population explosion.” Response: This quote was surprising because I learned that the term means that the number of people on Earth is growing fast. - ! I think this shows me that the text will tell me why the population is exploding. - P

Why Our Population is Increasing Pg. 533: “We need to be aware of the effect such as large human population will have on our environment. We need to ask ourselves whether we have enough natural resources to support such a large population. Response: First, there will be problems because of the population. Second, can the Earth handle this or not? – S, Q

How People Affect the Enviroment Pg. 536: “If you live in the United States, you will use five times as much energy as an average person living elsewhere in the world.” Response: This number is important because it shows that the US is a huge player in effects on the Earth from population. Why is this? - #, Q

Our Daily Activities Pg. 536: “The environment is changed when the fuels are mined, and later burned.” Response: What is changed in the environment based on the burning of these materials? - Q

Our Daily Activities Pg. 537: “We change the land when we remove resources from it, and we further impact the environment when we shape those resources into usable products.” Response: Using this strategy label -C- Do this one on your own.

The Future Pg. 537: “People are the problem, but we are also the solution.” Response: Do this one on your own. Pick your strategy that you used after responding.

Review Look over your notes. Can you read them? Did you get all the quotes, responses, and strategies? Do you want to change anything that you wrote down? At this point you could highlight anything that needs to stand out even more.

Exit Slip Assignment Create a 2-3 sentence summary. Use YOUR OWN WORDS to write an overview of what this chapter was about. Use your notes to help guide your summary. Turn this in before you leave.
