3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. 3M Fire Barrier Duct Wrap 615  Air Duct Fire Protection – When Do You Need It  Application and Market Overview  Protection~ Duct Wrap versus Drywall Shafts  Market, Strategy, and Direction  Overview of the 3M Fire Barrier Duct Wrap Product  Additional Resources

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Air Duct Protection Is Required in Several Areas * check local state code section, ie Calif CMC sec 510 Life Safety Air Supply Ducts Stair pressurization for a smokeproof enclosure IBC sec Ducts Crossing Exit Corridors IBC, sec & Life Safety Air Supply Ducts NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, sec 8.5 Bundling of Dislike Ducts/Systems IMC, sec * High Rise Bldgs Hospitals, Prisons, Institutions Variety -Typically Undampered -Ducts involved with areas of life safety Typical Type of Building Application Segment

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Application Overview- Stair Pressurization for Smokeproof Enclosures Where Does The Need Exist?  Air/Ventilation ducts as part of a “smokeproof enclosure” system  Smokeproof enclosures are required in high rise buildings, serving floors more than 75 ft, IBC  A smokeproof enclosure consists of an enclosed interior exit stairway and an open exterior balcony or ventilated vestibule. IBC  The vestibule can be ventilated via natural IBC or mechanical means IBC  Stair Pressurization is an alternative means to achieving a smokeproof enclosure system IBC  Stair Pressurization is very commonly done with fans situated at the roof or ducts leading from the outside wall.*  Refer to diagrams from IBC commentary How Does Duct Wrap Become Relevant?  These ducts are required to be protected, IBC  To protect the integrity of the duct (keep it from collapsing)  To keep the air ventilation system moving into the vestibule exit stairwell during fire situations  …” shall be protected by opening protectives in accordance with section 715 for shaft enclosures”, IBC  JHA’s will accept duct wrap as a shaft alternative, driven by its design flexibility.

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Fire Events – Smoke Control and Egress 69 West Washington Building The occupants who were still in the southeast stairwell above the 12th floor after 5:10 pm remained exposed to smoke and heat after the door to the 12th floor was opened. Smoke conditions in the stairwell were moderate when the first occupants entered the southeast stairwell. The air quality in the stairwell became progressively worse after the firefighters breached the door on the 12th floor, which allowed smoke from the fire floor to flood the southeast stairwell. (Report of the Cook County Commission Investigating the 69 West Washington Building Fire of October 17, 2003)

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Fire Events – Smoke Control and Egress La Salle Bank Building And perhaps most important, people above the flames on the 29th floor opened their windows and breathed through towels and clothes as they waited as long as 45 minutes to an hour for firefighters to arrive and lead them out of the smoke-filled building down stairs and at least one elevator. (“Blaze Turns High-Rise Into Tower of Smoke and Fear”, Chicago Sun Times December 7, 2007)

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Application Overview- Life Safety Ducts for Critical Care or Refuge Areas  Where Do You Find These?  These are un-dampered ducts, feeding critical care areas (operating rooms, recovery rooms, emergency, neo-natel, delivery rooms), that need to keep operations going and people safe during fire/smoke situations  Also, un-dampered ducts, feeding special care and treatment facilities ( psychiatric institutions, prisons)  These ducts are required to be protected

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Air supply (non-Life Safety) Air supply and return ducts feeding critical care room (Life Safety ducts required to be fire protected ) Location- Hospital Facility

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Application Overview- Separation of Laboratory Chemical/Fume Ducts from Air Ducts  The Mechanical Code requires that fume ducts be separated from other ducts within a certain distance or with one shaft enclosure  If dislike ducts are located within the same shaft enclosure, one of the ducts need to be protected (typically the fume duct but can also be the air duct – check your local mechanical code for detailed rules.

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Application Overview- Ducts Crossing Exit Corridor  Ducts passing through exit passageways or stairways need to be protected  Cannot jeopardize the ability of the exit passageway to protect people from escaping a building in a fire.

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Why Duct Wrap? Traditional shaft protectionAlternative space saving duct wrap

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. Why Consider Duct Wrap as a Shaft Alternative  Space Savings and Design Flexibility  Space limitation of gypsum shafts are dependent on the way the shaftwall is designed (see pictures)  Challenges of horizontal ducts  Duct configurations (turns and elbows) can be difficult to design a shaft around it

3M B&CSD - Fire Protection © 3M All Rights Reserved. The challenge of horizontal ducts- A shaft cannot be built around this duct in this scenario
