FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Code Interpretation  Uses the extensive knowledge of the code  Interpret the meaning or intent of the code  Aided by the intent statements in the performance based codes 10

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Plans Review (1) Building Information required on documents Building name and number. The governing building code for project (2006 or 2009 VUSBC). Occupancy Use group classification (original and current code if different). Occupant loads for building and work area. Nature of mixed use separation. Gross building area and height. Work zone area and height. Foundation plan drawn to scale with dimensions, details or notes reflecting code requirements. Features and location (s) of fire, smoke, or sound rated assemblies. Elevation drawings with details such as roof pitch, floor elevations above grade, and finish materials clearly noted. Detailed wall or building sections showing all structural elements. Provide roof plans for complex roofs and truss plans if utilized in design. Two copies of sealed floor and roof truss plans if utilized in design. Ceiling heights shall be noted on the wall section or the elevations. All framing members including joists, double joists, beams, girders, posts are to be specified and labeled as to material, grade, location, direction size and span on floor and foundation plans. Egress components. Accessibility (handicap) facilities. 11

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Plans Review (2)  Fire Protection  Piping Diagrams  Hydraulic Calculations  Alarm Design package 12

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Exit Analysis  In emergencies occupants need to exit a building safely & effectively.  Depends on design and layout of building.  Exiting challenges addressed with  fire models,  egress simulations, &  occupant movement analysis  Discuss with the Authorities Having Jurisdiction to confirm solution 13

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Fire Resistive Ratings  Measure time that structural elements and assemblies withstand fire.  Elements may include  floor or roof construction,  structural elements, &  select interior and exterior wall assemblies  Promoting safe egress, & protecting responding fire fighters.  Closures and penetrations protected to resist the spread of fire.  Some existing approved assemblies may not meet needs.  Develop alternative solutions or engineered judgements achieve ratings  Help obtain the necessary approvals of these designs  by coordinating prototype testing with recognized laboratories. 14

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Fire Safety Plans  A well-designed Fire Safety Plan includes comprehensive, detailed information about your building and emergency procedures that work and are easy to understand  Fire Safety Plans include:  A comprehensive fire safety building audit  Documentation of building resources and human resources  Fire department and firefighting information  Specific emergency procedures for occupants  Fire drill procedures and records  Methods for controlling fire hazards in the building  Maintenance schedule for the building’s fire protection equipment  Alternative safety measures for occupants  Building schematic floor and site plans 15

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Reserve Fund Studies  Condo’s have to carry out a Reserve Fund Study "periodically”  Every three years.  Study by experts with a special designation  Members of Appraisal Institute of Canada or Ontario Association of Certified Engineers.  Purpose of the study is to  examine all the systems (i.e., heating) and other physical aspects (garage, balconies, windows)  give a reasonable expectation as to when they will need to be replaced or have non-routine repairs and  how much this will cost at that projected time in the future. 16

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Site Inspections  Site inspections during systems installation  Compliance with design 17

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Fire Separations  correctly interpreting the regulation requirements,  assessing fire separations and closures in existing buildings, and  documenting observations and conclusions.  Fire separation means a construction assembly that acts as a barrier against the spread of fire and may or may not have a fire-resistance rating or a fire-protection rating. 18

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Fire System Sequencing  During a Fire  Fire Alarm has a sequence of responses to any input  Make sure that  Audibles operate  Signals are sent to fire department  Ancillary systems are activated (ie recall the elevator to ground floor) 19

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals MagLock Permit Coordination  Maglock require a building permit  Controls access or egress of occupants 20

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Product Code Compliance  Some materials & products don’t fit the existing of Building Codes.  Materials and products must meet the approval requirements of regulatory agencies.  Assist in the approval process of material or product.  Recommend testing methods  Outline product compliance with Building Code 21

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Sprinkler Systems  Standpipe, Fire Pumps & Water Supply  Already discussed  Design, Project management, Site Inspections & Occupancy Permit Applications 22

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Fire Alarm System  Already discussed  Design, Project management, Site Inspections & Occupancy Permit Applications 23

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Special Hazard  NFPA-2001 Based systems  Foam  Hangars  Design, Project management, Site Inspections & Occupancy Permit Applications 24

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Mass Notification Systems  Large buildings (institutions and campus style facilities) need to transmit messages many people in emergency situations  Design of mass notification systems  Review of requirements  Development a strategy of wide area notification using multiple communication systems 25

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Sources of Information  LRI Website  RBA Engineering Website  VanFire Website  OFM Website 26

FPF190: Fire Protection Fundamentals Wrap-up  Summary  Questions 27
