Wellness Wellness is the total well being of your body, your mind and your relationships with others.

Wellness comes from making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on sound knowledge and healthful behaviors.

3 Aspects of Wellness Physical health is how your body functions.

Mental health is how good you feel about yourself

Social health is how well you get along with others.

Risk Factors : Any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury disease or other negative outcome. 4 Types of Risk Hereditary risk are all traits that are passed on biologically from parent to child. Environmental risk are the social and physical conditions that affect your life. Behavioral risk are the actions and decisions you make. Cummulative risk are when are added to each additional risk

Prevention : The practice of healthy behaviors that keep someone free of disease and other health problems.

Self Esteem

Self Esteem refers to how much you like yourself and feel good about yourself. Characteristics of people with high self esteem: accepts self realistic view of their strengths and weaknesses are able to form close relationships with others value self by making healthy choices and avoiding risk

Feeling good about yourself has a direct effect on your physical, mental and social health

Self esteem development: parents and family peers teachers, coaches, leaders in your life the media

2 Components of self esteem: Self efficacy is the belief in your abilities to deal with the basic challenges of life to make appropriate decisions. (“I can do”) Self respect is the belief that you are worthy of love, friendship and happiness just as a natural result of being yourself. (“I am worth it”)

Ways to build self esteem: Change what can be changed and don’t waste time on what you can’t change Practice optimism Toss out the all-or-nothing thinking Get the facts don’t assume or imagine Choose good friends Learn something new Accentuate the positive and don’t beat yourself up Do something nice for others
