Other projects Safari (1998 – 2002) – Audience too broad – Lack of incentive for the researchers – Few users, high cost Forskning.se ( ) – News and information about research results – Adds comprehensive summaries – Today owned by 10 research funding bodies

Attempts to collect and present information on current research in Sweden have had difficulties. Sweden ScienceNet was created with the expressed ambition to reuse existing information, especially quality assured information, from the funding bodies through as automatic means as possible.

A brief history of Sweden ScienceNet 2003 – The LIFT-project – Universities in Stockholm, Vinnova and Avedas – Life science only 2005 – Sweden ScienceNet 1.0 – Analysis of audiences information needs – Reuse and structure existing information – Make it useful for the universities

Sweden ScienceNet 2.0 Overall goal – a national infrastructure for managing research information – Better tools for planning, analysis and reporting – Make research competencies accessible – Add one more field of science – Include large funders – Include universities doing significant research within life science – Contribute to a more efficient granst process from application to awarding Project manager: Stockholm Science City Industry partner: Avedas

Project results Extensive data inventory Information needs analysis All fields of science Web portal presenting current research at Swedish universities (project grants from 2 major funders) Preliminary dialogue with more funders

Use of Sweden ScienceNet Universities – Management at different levels – Departments of planning and information – Grants offices / departments for financing of research – Research group leaders and individual researchers – Connections to other systems (e. g. publications) Ministries and governmental agencies Funding organisations Industry The general public

Visitors statistics 40% of visits from Sweden Germany, US, UK, India, France, Finland, China Typical user finds a project description via Google Swedish visitors tend to visit the researcher pages, other nationalities visit project pages

Ongoing and future development Data from more funding bodies – Increase todays 50 % to 80 % and more Implement standards for better interoperability – Classify according to the new Swedish standard – Adopt CERIF (or at least export in CERIF-XML) Extending the system – SwePub – Local integrations – New system for common application submission and application assessment

Recap A current research information system accessible on the Internet developed with active university participation and partly with university funding contains data about research projects in which researchers are involved rapidly growing in content does not require any input from the researchers contains high quality data from public and private funding agencies can be connected to other national information systems can be used together with local systems for research information recently taken over by the Swedish Research Council
