4 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 4 CRUE ERA-Net – Research Agenda Developing a European research agenda in flood risk management -key goal is providing the basis for effective management of flood risk and delivering sustainable development in Europe -should address the common vision and research needs of various European Member States and the EC in the field of Flood Risk Management in the next few years -will make an important contribution to strengthening the European Research Area (ERA) and support Member States in implementing the EU Floods Directive.

5 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 5 CRUE’s draft Research Agenda – details … CRUE has identified four major challenges which have to be tackled by FRM policy & research in the near future -Challenge 1 – A changing climate -Challenge 2 – Land use intensification and increased vulnerability -Challenge 3 – Traditional and uncoordinated protection strategies -Challenge 4 – Sustainable development, environmental protection and delivery multiple benefits

6 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 6 CRUE’s draft Research Agenda – details … to meet the major challenges European Flood Risk Management faces, CRUE has identified 5 Strategic Areas of Research: -Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change and Development -Supporting strategies in the implementation of the EU “Flood Directive” -Meeting the multifunctional demands on flood prevention and protection and their sustainable management -Addressing public knowledge on flood risk awareness, perception & communications -Implementing trans-national based strategies on flood event management and recovery

7 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 7 CRUE’s draft Research Agenda – next steps International CRUE WS, Budapest, 23 April 08 -to brief stakeholders on the Discussion Paper -to discuss key issues and options for the detailed implementation of CRUE’s Research Agenda -to ensure that stakeholders are aware of how they may participate in the process of going forward Does WG F wish to influence the prioritisation of work in the CRUE research agenda in order to assist MS in the implementation of EU Floods Directive?

8 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 8 CRUE paper on research perspectives on implementation of the Floods Directive CRUE provided comments on how existing R&D could support MS in the outlined Floods Directive implementation tasks CRUE found that less research is needed to support the implementation of the FD tasks “Identify general hydrology” and “Designate significant flood risk zones” -CRUE found that urgent research needs are on -Evaluation of past floods -Flood plains as natural retention areas -Assessment of man made flood defence infrastructure -Long-term development scenarios of land use -Climate change related flood scenarios -Public participation -Developing Flood hazard maps -Developing Flood risk maps Available at http://www.crue-eranet.net /

9 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 9 Topic “Flood resilient communities – managing the consequences of flooding” Thematic priorities: –Improving risk awareness and increasing public participation –Flood event management Both thematic priorities have strong links to the Floods Directive Call announcement planned in May 2008 Calls for trans-nationally based joint research projects Duration up to 24 month CRUE update: 2 nd CRUE Research Funding Initiative

11 17 April 2008WG F meeting, CRUE update, Brussels 11 CRUE ERA-Net – Next Steps Aim … to allow policy-makers (both on European as well as on national level) a quick snapshot of FRM research that may be relevant to them Publishing “CRUE snapshot” Addressing  Key policy-relevant research projects that have been published in the last year  FRM policy/formal developments  Implementation issues regarding WFD, Floods Directive  Update on CRUE ’ s Research Compass – to allow a quick overview on the spectrum of funded/commissioned FRM research
