RBT: Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy What you need to be able to do with material that is taught to you.

Pre-Assessment At your table is a piece of chart paper with a RBT verb listed (Summarize, Compare, Explain, Analyze, Evaluate). As a group, define the meaning of the RBT verb in your own words.

Pre-Assessment Find the group that has the same RBT verb as your group. Combine groups and compare your definitions for the RBT verb. As a group, come up with a one sentence summary of the definition for the RBT word.

Summarize Summarizing occurs when a student produces a short statement/paragraph that encapsulates information or abstracts a general theme. - Richard E. Maye

Summarize ●Writing a summary ○Identify the Main Idea/Major Points ○Paraphrase the ideas/points as the 1st sentence of summary ○Identify 2-3 supportive ideas to include ○Use appropriate transition words to make connections within summary ○Read draft and delete any irrelevant information

Compare Comparing involves detecting similarities and differences between two or more objects, events, ideas, problems, or situations. - Richard E. Maye and

Explain Explaining occurs when a student investigates and understands the causes, effects, and the relationships among historical events. - Richard E. Maye

Explain ●Make sure to have a clear understanding of the meaning of both cause and effect and the relationship between the two. ●Use “if… then” statements ●Focus attention on a single question, “Why?” ○Make lists of possible causes ○All explanations of “Why?” must meet three criteria ■Supported by evidence ■Reasonable ■Credible

Analyze Analyze involves breaking material into parts and determining how the parts are related to each other and/or to an overall structure. - Richard E. Maye 3 Methods 1.Differentiating: distinguish between relevant and irrelevant parts 2.Organizing: determining how things fit within a structure 3.Attributing: determine point of view, bias, and intent You must have something to analyze! You need stimulus.

Analyze Differentiating: distinguish between relevant and irrelevant parts Organizing: determining how things fit within a structure Attributing: determine point of view, bias, and intent

Evaluate Evaluate is defined as making judgments based on criteria and standards. The criteria most often used are quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and consistency. - Richard E. Maye You must have something to evaluate! You need stimulus. You need criteria for evaluation!

Evaluate Teacher Recommendations ●We evaluate “in terms of” or “based on” some criteria. ●Our criteria is often related to quality, effectiveness, efficiency, or consistency. ●Evaluate and Analyze often occur together.

Keep In Mind Learning to think critically ●Must be taught, practiced, and developed ●Takes time ●Involves a process and format
