1 EDU704 – Assessment and Evaluation
Taxonomy of educational objectives: Cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains Week 5 Lecture Fereal Ibrahim

2 Introduction Taxonomy means 'a set of classification principles', or 'structure‘. Domain means 'category‘. The most well known description of learning domains was developed by Benjamin Bloom. It is known as : “Bloom’s Taxonomy”

3 The three domains Affective domain Psychomotor domain Cognitive domain

4 Affective domain EMOTIONAL LEARNING: FEELING
Concerned with attitudes, appreciations, interests, values and adjustments.

5 Psychomotor domain PHYSICAL LEARNING: DOING
Emphasizes speed, accuracy, dexterity, and physical skills.

6 Cognitive domain RATIONAL LEARNING: THINKING
Emphasis upon knowledge, using the mind, and intellectual abilities. Often referred to as Instructional or behavioral objectives that begin with VERBS

7 Bloom’s taxonomy Behaviours are taught to be cumulative, going from simple to more complex mental behaviors.

8 Cognitive domain Bloom’s Taxonomy is an order of learning with six levels. Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge

9

10 1. Knowledge Recalling, Remembering, and Recognizing.
Emphasizing facts, information, and specifics. Involves remembering material in form very close to how it was originally presented. Depends upon memorizing or identifying facts without asking beyond.

11 2. Comprehension Describing and Explaining
Grasping the meaning and intent of the material. Deals with content and involves ability to understand what is being communicated.

12 3. Application Applying Information
Using what is remembered and comprehended. Applies learning to real life, new, and/or concrete situations. It is ability to use knowledge and learned material in meaningful ways.

13 4. Analysis Reasoning Breaking material into parts and determining the relationships of these parts to each other and to the whole. Analyzing Relationships Taking one portion or piece at a time to clarify the overall idea.

14 5. Synthesis Creating Putting together parts and elements into a new form. Organizing ideas into new patterns and putting materials together in a structure which was not there before.

15 6. Evaluation Evaluating
Judging the values of ideas, methods, materials, procedures, and solutions by developing and/or using appropriate criteria.

16 Affective domain Affective: growth in feelings or emotional areas
(feelings, emotions and behaviour, ie., attitude, or 'feel')

17 Affective domain levels Krathwohl’s Taxonomy
Receiving Being aware of, or attending to something in the environment Responding Showing some new behavior as a result of experience Valuing Showing some definite involvement or commitment Receiving-Examples: Listen to others with respect. Listen for and remember the name of newly introduced people. Responding-Examples:  Participates in class discussions.  Gives a presentation. Questions new ideals, concepts, models, etc. in order to fully understand them. Know the safety rules and practices them. Valuing-Demonstrates belief in the democratic process. Is sensitive towards individual and cultural differences (value diversity). Shows the ability to solve problems. Proposes a plan to social improvement and follows through with commitment. Informs management on matters that one feels strongly about.

18 Affective domain levels Krathwohl’s Taxonomy
Organization Integrating a new value into one's general set of values relative to other priorities.(make choices between two or more values) Characterization Acting consistently with the new value; person is known by the value.(Attitudes, beliefs, & values have become internalized & a way of life.) Organisation-Recognizes the need for balance between freedom and responsible behavior. Accepts responsibility for one’s behavior. Explains the role of systematic planning in solving problems. Accepts professional ethical standards. Creates a life plan in harmony with abilities, interests, and beliefs. Prioritizes time effectively to meet the needs of the organization, family, and self. Characterization- Shows self-reliance when working independently. Cooperates in group activities (displays teamwork). Uses an objective approach in problem solving.  Displays a professional commitment to ethical  practice on a daily basis. Revises judgments and changes behavior in light of new evidence. Values people for what they are, not how they look.
