Mythology Essay DUE JANUARY 13, 2015 *30 POINT ESSAY-5 POINTS PER PARAGRAPH (FOCUS ON PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE AND INFORMATION GATHERING) FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS: WHAT DOES STUDYING MYTHOLOGY TEACH US ABOUT OTHERS AND ABOUT OURSELVES?

Essay Format *Introduce mythology and explain its permanence over time. Why do people still share stories of: great heroes like Heracles and Perseus, great monsters like the Cyclops and Medusa, or fearsome gods like Zeus and Cronus? (one paragraph) *Pick a topic from the Greek Legacy/Framework Chart and explain how and why that “legacy” is most important to you. What do you see in our present day society that holds true to what the “gods left behind.” (one paragraph) *Choose two stories/characters that can provide insight into your topic. Eg. If alliances are a necessary evil in this large world, what should an alliance provide to either party? How did your chosen story/character demonstrate this need? Did it really benefit all members involved? What country or groups of people are forming alliances nowadays that reflect some aspect of this “mythological” concept? What is their dispute and what does each group stand to gain from a partnership? (two paragraphs) *Wrap up your essay. Re-state your points referencing your choices and cross referencing them to present day issues.

Mythology Essay Draft Share *Present draft to share with classmates on Thursday and Friday. *ALL ESSAYS MUST HAVE THREE REFERENCES FROM NEWS SITES (Associated Press, NBC, Chicago Tribune, etc.). *Five extra points will be given to each person having more than two critiques on rough draft this week. *Three extra points will be given for sharing your final essay on the drive before the return to classes on January 5, 2015.
