1 Civil War Project Choices to Demonstrate Unit Mastery 1.Work with a group of classmates to present a class debate on whether the South should secede. 2.Write an essay or do a research presentation comparing and contrasting Confederate secession with modern day secession. 3.Political cartoon analysis: Choose five political cartoons from the 1800s dealing with Civil War issues. OR, choose four cartoons and create one of your own. 4.Research study on human rights progress and legislation in the United States from 1776 through now. 5.Create a piece of art (sculpture, drawing, painting, etc.) and write a historical fiction story or research paper to accompany it. 6. Other____________________________. Explain your idea to me for approval. 7.Do a second project by Feb. 3 to exempt yourself from the Edgenuity unit test on Unit Four. The project grade will be counted in place of the test grade. DUE JANUARY 28!

2 Debate Instructions: Should the South be Allowed to Secede? Work with a group of classmates to represent one side or the other, Union or Confederacy. Take notes that you can use to actively debate and support the arguments for your side. You must cite or show an illustration of (powerpoint) at least one primary source that you used in your research. Use the same debate format we used in the previous class debate: Opening statement Three arguments for your side Opportunity for rebuttal (anticipate your opponents’ objections) Closing statements

3 Essay or research presentation comparing and contrasting Confederate secession with modern day secession efforts. Introduce your topic by briefly explaining how and why the Confederate states seceded. Research current groups and efforts in various states to secede from the United States. Include at least two secession efforts in your paper. Compare the issues and the success level of modern day efforts with the Confederate effort. Your paper should be at least 1-1/2 TYPED pages. Powerpoint version must contain at least 10 slides, at least five illustrations, and at least five short paragraphs of 3-5 sentences each. You must cite or show an illustration of (powerpoint) at least one primary source that you used in your research.

4 Political Cartoon Analysis Instructions Your presentation should contain 10 slides: five with cartoons on them and five with 1-2 paragraphs of analysis for each one. Identify objects, people, symbols, and/or events depicted in the cartoon. What words are used in titles, captions, and/or speech/thought bubbles? Describe the action taking place in the cartoon. Explain how the words relate to the images. Explain the message of the cartoon. Explain the point of view or opinion that is being communicated. Who is the intended audience?

5 Essay or research study on human rights progress and legislation in the United States from 1776 through now. Introduce your topic by briefly explaining an overview of human rights beliefs and priorities when the United States was founded. Research human rights abuses in this country over the past 250 years. Research current groups and efforts in various states to promote human rights in the United States. Include at least two current human rights issues and reform efforts in your paper. Your paper should be at least 1-1/2 TYPED pages. Powerpoint version must contain at least 10 slides, at least five illustrations, and at least five short paragraphs of 3-5 sentences each. You must cite or show an illustration of (powerpoint) at least one primary source that you used in your research.

6 Art and Writing Create a piece of artwork (sculpture, drawing, painting, etc.) depicting a historical event or person. Write a one-page typed paper that is either historical fiction OR straight research in which you explain your artwork and demonstrate your understanding of the person or event. You must cite or include an illustration of at least one primary source that you used in your research.
