Literacy Curriculum

Reading Street Concept – each concept includes multiple skills within one theme, which integrates language arts with science and social studies.

Literacy Curriculum Concept Test At the end of every concept students will have a test, which incorporates the literacy skills, social studies, and science. At the end of every concept, students will also have a written task assessment. Concept Tests and Written Assessments are entered as a language arts grade. Concept Tests are created by the district.

Literacy Curriculum How can I help my child at home? Make sure they are studying their spelling skills. Review vocabulary words and meanings. Allow them to use the resource websites. Make sure they are reading AR nightly. Let them read out loud to you to practice their reading fluency.

Students use science notebooks in class to record a variety of material learned in each chapter such as:  Recording Predictions, observations and results  Vocabulary  Student drawings  Tables, charts and graphs  Important notes, reports and reflections  Inquiry Activities: These provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and do investigations like scientists do Writing and recording what they learn will help students understand why they are doing the activities and what it teaches them. Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) AR is an interactive reading program that tests students’ comprehension. Gives an independent reading level Range of books the students can read and comprehend without assistance. Example- ( ) or ( ) Students need to practice reading every day. Students take the STAR test once per quarter and levels are adjusted based on the results.

Behavior Expectations PBS (Positive Behavior Support) Students at MLE earn Panther Bucks for following guidelines and expectations for good behavior Panther Bucks are rewards and incentives for good behavior in the classroom, in the cafeteria, at specials, and on the bus! When students earn enough Panther Bucks, they are able to purchase Pop-Up Prizes which happen every 4-6 weeks.
