Getting Started 1. What are the TWO main jobs of muscles? 2. What is homeostasis?

Vocab For This Week Auditory- having to do with sound Bile- a secretion made by the liver that helps in digestions Gall Bladder-an organ used to hold extra bile from the liver Motor- having to do with movement Olfactory- having to do with smell Secretion- a chemical (often liquid) that is made and released

Nervous System Daily Objective: How do your reflexes work?

Nervous System

Purposes

Communication Control Regulation

Classifications Central Nervous System – Brain & spinal cord – Functions to receive and interpret messages from the PNS and relays action/reaction back through the PNS – “Processing center” Peripheral Nervous System – Nerves that leave brain & spinal cord that travel to parts of the body – Functions to send messages from sensory receptors to the CNS Motor and sensory Transmits nerve impulses

Neurons

Parts of a Neuron Cell body- acts as a ‘factory’ for the rest of the cell by producing energy and other essential molecules Dendrite-receives information from the environment in the form of chemical signals Axon- receives chemical signals from the dendrites, converts these signals to electrical impulses, and transmits the electrical impulses to the synaptic terminal Synaptic terminal- receives electrical impulses from the axon, converts this to a chemical signal, and releases neurotransmitters to the outside of the cell Myelin Sheath- helps nerve impulses take place in a fast and accurate manner

How do Neurons send messages?

Why do we have reflexes?

How Our Reflexes Work Afferent or sensory neurons receive information from outside the body using sensory receptors and sends them to other neurons to produce a response Efferent or motor neurons receive information from other neurons and sends information to effectors (muscles, glands) which produce a response

Ex) Touching Something Hot

Reflex Arc Interneuron Receptors in skin Afferent neuron (to the brain) Efferent neuron (from the brain) Effector (muscle)

Getting Started 1. Which statement best describes how the nervous system helps a person react quickly after stepping on something sharp? A Electrical impulses are created by the muscles to move the foot away. B Each skin cell has pain receptors that directly cause muscle movement in the foot. C The muscles conduct pain impulses to the brain, which directs nerves to pull the foot away. D Signals travel on nerves to the spinal cord, which causes a reflex that pulls the foot away. 2. What is this a picture of?

Sense Organs Daily Objective: How do you see, smell, hear, and taste?

Sense Organs

Sensory Receptors Thermoreceptors: sense heat or cold (one type for each sensation) Photoreceptors: Sense light Mechanoreceptors: Sense pressure (many types and vary on level of sensitivity)

Touch

Pain

Smell

Taste

Hearing

Sight

Getting Started What is the purpose of a reflex? What is the classification (Central or peripheral) for the part of the nervous system that includes the brain and spinal cord?

Parts of the Brain Daily Objective: What are the different parts of your brain and what does each section do?

The Brain

Temporal long-term memory, object recognition, auditory information, speech center

Frontal critical thinking, ranking reactions, selecting appropriate responses

Occipital vision

Parietal process sensory info from body (skin) and spatial orientation (where things are around them).

Cerebellum takes in info on the position of body parts and coordinates body movement

Brain Stem reflexes, heart pumping, breathing, smooth muscle contractions

Spine conduct nerve impulses to and from brain, spinal reflexes

No Note Highlighting I am not going to test you on the parts of the brain-the notes are there just for you to have as reference However, we are going to use the information to help with out next activity

Vocab Quiz

Auditory, Bile, Gall Bladder, Motor, Olfactory, Secrete The nerves that sends messages to move your body are called _____ neurons. When an organ makes and releases a chemical, we say that it _________ the chemical. The __________ is an organ that stores a chemical that helps in digestion called ________. Your nose is filled with _________ receptors. When you listen to loud music, you can damage your __________ receptors.
