1. What are your 5 senses? 2. Give an example of a stimulus for each one of your senses. (stimulus = something you can sense) Example: Hearing  Listening to Mr. Barron’s fire mixtape SILENT DO NOW 1-15-16

The Nervous System

The nervous system is made up of the: Brain Spinal Cord Network of Nerves that branch out to ALL parts of your body The Nervous System

What is its FUNCTION? Receives information about what’s happening inside and outside the body. Directs the way your body responds to this info. Helps maintain homeostasis. Function of the Nervous System

Homeostasis The body’s ability to keep its internal conditions stable (the same). When your body is hot it… sweats When your body is cold it… “Goosebumps” rise up on the skin Teeth begin to chatter

Label in your notes, please

A Neuron (a.k.a. Nerve Cell) Neurons carry information through the nervous system. There are BILLIONS of neurons in your body. They are constantly sending/receiving messages.

A Neuron (Nerve Cell) DENDRITES – receive messages Direction message travels AXON – carry the messages down to the AXON TIPS, which sends the message to the next neuron.

Let’s act it out…. What happens in your nervous system when you are stung by a bee?

The Nervous System & our Senses

The Sense Organs Your sense organs have nerve receptors that respond to stimuli (stuff going on outside the body) and send messages to your brain where it is interpreted. EYES respond to LIGHT (sight) EARS respond to SOUND (hearing) SKIN responds to PRESSURE & HEAT (touch) NOSE responds to SMELL (smell) TONGUE responds to TASTE (taste)

Taste Taste works like your other senses. Nerve receptors (your taste buds) recognize different chemicals in your food. The taste buds send the chemical information to your brain, where it is recognized as taste.

Divisions of the Nervous System There are two divisions within the Nervous System: - Central Nervous System - Peripheral Nervous System

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Sends electrical signals through nerve cells in order to communicate with the rest of the nervous system Made up of brain and spinal cord Central Nervous = + System

-About 3 pounds -Size of both hands together -2 halves (left and right) -Different parts of the brain do different things The Brain Cerebrum Cerebellum Brain Stem

Your brain also has neurons!

SPINAL CORD Connects the brain to the nerves Is the main “highway” for information within the Nervous System Sends messages from brain to nerves and from nerves to brain.

PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Name for all of the nerves of your body Contains both sensory and motor nerves Sensory nerves Sense things (like heat and pressure) Send that information off to the CNS Motor nerves Send signals to muscles to make them move Two types of signals (autonomic and voluntary)

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM In charge of involuntary muscles Involuntary muscles  muscles that work automatically (heart, stomach, etc) Power the “Fight or Flight” response When it detects danger, your body decides very rapidly to either fight it or to run away from it.

VOLUNTARY NERVOUS SYSTEM In charge of things that you can control consciously. Every movement you think to do is considered voluntary. Examples? Moving arms, legs, etc. Flexing muscles Talking Etc.

Test Your Reaction Time 1)Hold your thumb and fingers about 3 cm apart at the 0 cm end of a meter stick. 2)Your partner will drop the meter stick and you need to grab it as quickly as possible. 3)The faster you grab it, the lower the measurement on the meter stick.

EXIT TICKET! 1-14-16 1.What would happen if someone snapped their spinal cord? How could this happen? 2.Why would it take longer for your foot to react to a stimulus than your arm? 3.Draw and label a neuron.

DO NOW 1-15-16 1.What are the 3 parts/organs of the nervous system? 2.Draw the parts of a neuron. 3. Label the parts of a neuron. 4. Label the job description of that neuron. 5. How does the message of stepping on a nail get to your brain and then back to your foot?
