The Nervous System Easy on, Easy off… Feb 17, 2016
2
Divisions of the Nervous System 1.Central – the control centers – Brain and spinal cord 2.Peripheral – the Sensory Nerves deliver info to the CNS; Motor Nerves take info from the CNS to muscles and endocrine glands.
3
Parts of the Brain 1.Cerebrum: higher thought processes, memory, decision making, interprets sensory input 2.Cerebellum: coordination of muscles 3.Brain Stem: control unconscious actions like breathing, blood pressure, heart rate
4
Parts of the Brain 4. Thalamus and Hypothalamus: detect overall body feelings (like temperature) and sends the info to the proper part of the brain or endocrine gland
5
Neuron Parts Cell Body: contains organelles
6
Neuron Parts Nucleus: genetic instructions for the neuron
7
Neuron Parts Mitochondria: make energy needed to transmit messages
8
Neuron Parts Dendrites: receive incoming messages from sense organs or other neurons
9
Neuron Parts Axon: Transmits outgoing message
10
Neuron Parts Axon terminals: release neurotransmitters to send message to glands, muscles, or other neurons
11
Sending an Impulse Resting Potential: The inside of the neuron is negatively charged Action Potential: The charge reverses in one area of the neuron. This reversal along the axon to the terminals.
12
Neurotransmitters Synapse: gap between axon terminals and receptor (gland, muscle, neuron) Neurotransmitter: chemical released from axon terminals to transmit message Receptors: after receiving neurotransmitters a reaction starts Benefit: allows one neuron to communicate with multiple receptors
