Y11 Attainment Evening Questions: What is my child studying this year? Why two qualifications? What is the content in these qualifications? How and when will it be assessed? What can I do to help my child? What can my child do to help themselves? Any other questions?

What is my child studying this year? Additional Science (Studied in Y10 and Y11) Further Additional Science (Studied in Y11)

Why two qualifications? In GCSE Science students will generally do 2 qualifications (Core and Additional Science). This counts towards the EBacc qualification (a government measure of students attainment). Your child has been identified as talented in Science and thus been given the opportunity to obtain a third GCSE (Further Additional Science). They have already got their Core Science (Y10). As a result, your child will sit Additional and Further Additional Science Examinations in Y11.

What is the content in these qualifications? Additional Science Chemistry (C2) Biology (B2) Physics (P2) ISA (Investigative Skills Assessment) Further Additional Science Chemistry (C3) Biology (B3) Physics (P3) ISA (Investigative Skills Assessment)

The Big picture Cells and simple cell transport Tissues, organs and organ systems Photosynthesis Organisms and their environment Proteins – their functions and uses Aerobic and anaerobic respiration Cell division and inheritance Speciation Additional Science Biology (B2)

The Big picture Atomic structure A r and M r Bonding and representing bonding %age mass Energy changes and analysis of data Chemical reactions Rates of reaction Chemical methods Additional Science Chemistry (C2)

Further Additional Science

What can I do to help my child? Ask them what they learnt that day in Science. Ensure homework and green pen responses are being done. Make sure they get an opportunity to have a quiet place/environment to revise. Ask them to explain certain key ideas from Science to you.

What can my child do to help themselves? Set aside study time during the week. Keep to it! Organise! (Make a revision timetable, revision aids, respond to challenges in your book.) Buy a Revision Guide (£5.50 from parent pay). Find/Learn revision strategies that work for you. Evolve the way you learn by trying new ways to revise. MONITOR – EVALUATE - PLAN Homework once per cycle per subject Talk to your peers if you get stuck. If you are still not sure come and find us.

Any other questions?
