26. Target Setting and Grouping of students

27. Year 7 students will typically all have at least 10 different teachers for the different curriculum areas. This is great news with regard to them receiving high quality teaching from specialists but does present challenges with regard to teachers knowing what to expect of the individuals. By setting Potential grades we give teachers a strong indication of where students should be heading for. This will help them to ensure that all students fully realise their potential.
Parents and students also need to know whether they are achieving everything that they are capable of and the potential grades set a goal to be attained by the end of year 11. We expect most students to start working towards it in year 7, rather than getting to that level straight away.

We will continually review them and adjust them up whenever a child demonstrates they are consistently meeting, or exceeding them. We will need at least 2 terms of work before we do this to ensure we are not setting goals that are out of reach.

29. Grouping of students
All students are different! By the end of year 11 we need to prepare all our students to sit the same set of GCSEs however. In order to make this possible we want to personalise our curriculum to best meets the needs of the all our individual young people.
We use ability setting – this is because the evidence at Chesterton clearly demonstrates that this gets excellent results. A great example is Maths – Maths have always set at Chesterton, from early in year 7. This years GCSE results saw 82% gaining at least a grade C, whilst 40% gained the highest grades of A* and A. This is because in a ability set the teacher is able to carefully target the level of the work to the students within it. Obviously there is still work to be done on making sure the work matches the needs of the individuals but this is more successfully achieved in an ability set.
