Types of Poetry Miss Davis’s 8 th Grade Literature Class

Acrostic An acrostic is a poem in which the first letters of the lines spell a word, often the subject of the poem.

Cinquain A cinquain is a five-line poem with this syllable pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 2.

Clarihew A clerihew is a humorous four- line poem with an aabb rhyme scheme. It is about a specific person, often someone famous. The first line names the person.

Quatrain A quatrain is four lines of poetry that usually have a rhyme scheme.

Free Verse Free verse is poetry with no set rhythm or rhyme.
