Evaluation Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Hoodwink by Rebecca Bloomfield

Mainstream vs. Independent MainstreamIndependent Uses a large budget – lots of investment and money Low budget – less expensive equipment, not often filmed in a large studio set Well known actors/actresses/director New, emerging talent Attracts a wide, mainstream audience Tends to be made with a specific niche audience in mind – e.g. British High production values with special effects used Production values low, reflective of budget – relies on acting and narrative, not expensive effects High profile marketing campaign to attract as many people as possible – e.g. trailers, TV spots, billboards, viral campaigns, awards, interviews, etc. Small marketing campaign – e.g. viral marketing on social network sites, website, indie festivals, etc.

Mainstream distribution companies include: Universal Paramount (Shutter Island, Along Came A Spider) New Line Cinema (Se7en) Independent distribution companies include: Pathe (Adulthood) Optimum Releasing (Kill List) Lionsgate (The Holding) Mainstream film exhibitors include: Large cinema chains, multiplexes, large film festivals and award ceremonies, shown for long runs with many screenings all over the globe. Independent film exhibitors include: Art houses, independent cinemas like the Picture House chain (Duke of York Cinema), independent festivals, short runs in chosen, specialised locations.

Our Film: Hoodwink I think our film falls into the mainstream category as it could easily be adapted into a blockbuster thriller set in America instead of the UK. It has the potential to include special effects, and could easily star big actors and actresses. Using the film Along Came A Spider as our example, as it has a similar narrative, the film company Paramount might be interested in Hoodwink.Along Came A Spider

If Paramount were to distribute our film, it would be exhibited in the mainstream cinemas such as Odeon and Cineworld. They already distribute many mainstream films, including Thrillers such as Mission Impossible, making it likely that they would do the same for ours.Paramount Looking at some of the films in their filmography and the box offices figures for similar ones, we estimate that our film could gain potential box office figures of £10,632,446 (GBP).

If famous Hollywood actors such as Ryan Gosling or Jeremy Renner were to star in our film then it would attract a similar audience as to the films they have previously been in (e.g. Drive, Mission Impossible, etc.)Drive Mission Impossible Using a young female star will also help the female side of our audience relate to the film. However, I think it would be better to use a less well-known star, such as Phoebe Tonkin, to allow a fresh face onto the scene in Hollywood.

Using digital technologies such as social networking sites (Facebook, Tumblr, etc.) to promote our film would help direct it towards a teenage/young adult audience. We could also potentially create interactive apps for the iPhone and iPad to spark interest in the film before it is released, and advertise during Super Bowls and use key codes on posters in train stations to be scanned using smart phones.
