Key Terms. cell The basic unit of all living things. Carries out all of the activities in a living thing.
Cells Cells are the basic building blocks of living things. Each cell has a specific purpose to help an organism survive.
Cells. Simple organisms such as bacteria, are single cell. Plants and animals are made up of many cells. Each kind of cell has a particular function.

Animal Cell Cell Membrane Vacuole Cytoplasm Nucleus Chromosome Mitochondria Animal Cell

Plant Cell Cell Wall Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Vacuole Nucleus Chromosomes Mitochondria Chloroplasts Plant Cell

Organelle Function Vacuole- stores food water and wastes Nucleus- brain center of the cell that controls the cell activities. Cytoplasm- a jellylike substance that holds chemicals that keep the cell functioning

Organelle Functions Chromosomes- threadlike structures inside the nucleus that hold the DNA that determines the characteristics of the plant or animal. Mitochondria- The organelle that uses the food the chloroplasts make and turns it into energy. Chloroplasts- make the food for the cell

Organelle Functions Cell Membrane- thin covering that encloses the cell like a skin and holds the cell together. Cell Wall- the rigid layer that supports and protects the cell.
