1 Structures and Functions
Cells Structures and Functions

2 Cellular Organization:
Cells work together to form tissues. Tissues work together to form organs. Organs work together to form organ systems. Organ Systems work together to form Organisms.

3 Cellular Organization:
Video Time!!!

4 Cellular Organization:
Worksheet: Read the directions and complete the worksheet on cellular organization.

5 Types of cells… Unicellular – organisms that are made of only one cell. Multicellular - organisms that are made of more than one cell.

6 Types of cells… Video Time!!!

7 Types of cells… Prokaryotic – these are cells that DO NOT have a nucleus. BACTERIA!!! Eukaryotic – these are cells that DO have a nucleus. You!!!

8 Cell Structures and Functions:
Organelles – tiny structures found inside of cells. Can you point out some cell organelles?

9 Cell Structures and Functions:
Nucleus – directs all cell activities.

10 Cell Structures and Functions:
Cell Membrane - protective outer membrane of a cell that allows only certain materials to pass into and out of a cell.

11 Cell Structures and Functions:
Cytoplasm – gel-like material inside the cell membrane and outside the nucleus.

12 Cell Structures and Functions:
Endoplasmic Reticulum - folded membrane that moves materials around in the cell (transportation system).

13 Cell Structures and Functions:
Mitochondria - organelles that break down food and release energy. The Power House of the cell!

14 Cell Structures and Functions:
Cell Wall – rigid structure made of cellulose that supports and protects the plant cell. Always found outside of the cell membrane.

15 Cell Structures and Functions:
Chloroplast - organelles in plant cells that change light energy into chemical energy in the form of a sugar. PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!

16 Cell Structures and Functions:
Vacuoles - storage tanks for the cell (food, water, and waste).
