TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 4 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Thematic Working Group Orthoimagery – Future activities ●February- March Internal revision of version 2.9 of Data Specification ●April Publication of version 3.0 RC of Data Specification ●April – June Preparation of Draft Implementing Rule by EC ●July Consultation of European Commission Inter-Service and INSPIRE Committee Members ●September Implementing Rule finalization ●October INSPIRE Committee meeting ●Q Legal Act for Implementing Rule adoption

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 5 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Satellite community requirements background ●Earth Observation Satellite community has its own interoperability framework and infrastructure based on ISO and OGC standards. ●Earth Observation Satellite community is a data provider of ortho-rectified images. ●Numerous EO users requirements have been collected in the interoperability effort. ●Interoperability obtained through standardization of metadata and services. ●Four key user requirements not completely satisfied by INSPIRE TWG-OI

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 6 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Satellite community users requirements for EO data [REQ-1] Product origin shall be traceable at product level. [REQ-2] The mapping between metadata of different framework shall be minimized [REQ-3] The metadata provided shall follow a model driven approach [REQ-4] The data model shall be compatible with current web distribution service for coverages

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 7 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use INSPIRE guidelines for O&M usage ●X-TWG OM published guidelines in July 2011 (concurrently with data specification v2 release) : Guidelines for the use of Observations & Measurements and Sensor Web Enablement-related standards in INSPIRE Annex II and III data specification development (D2.9_v1.0) ●Identification of Themes for which O&M is relevant as core or auxiliary concept ●The usage of O&M is recommended when provenance and quality information should be provided with the data ●The usage is discouraged when observation metadata is not important to users or providers do not want to give it ●The reference to O&M will satisfy all the requirements: −[REQ-1]: provenance is relevant for users −[REQ-2]: O&M is the base for EO product metadata −[REQ-3]: O&M follows the model driven approach −[REQ-4]: EO-O&M is used in the EO-WCS

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 8 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use The model driven approach ●Defined in ISO TC211 ●A universe of discourse is modelled formally as a conceptual model in a UML application schema using the General Feature Model of ISO ●Feature types may be registered in a feature catalogue specified within ISO for re-use, thus aiding interoperability ●From the UML model a canonical XML encoding can be generated automatically, following encoding rules defined according to ISO 19118, providing a GML application schema as per ISO ●Used in O&M model definition

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 9 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use O&M overview ●Observation and Measurement is a ISO and OGC standard (ISO 19156, OGC r3) ●An observation is an event that estimates an observed property of some feature of interest using a specified procedure and generates a result.

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 10 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use O&M UML diagram

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 11 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use O&M principles ●Observation/Method centric modelling approach ●The focus is not on the result but on how it has been obtained ●Useful to identify: −Data provenance −Data context −Fitness-for-purpose −Quality ●Based on the model driven approach

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 12 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use EO application profile of O&M ●OGC standard (OGC r2) ●Profiling of O&M model to Earth Observation domain ●Modular mechanism to accommodate different sensor/satellite requirements O&M OPT EOP SEN1 Generic O&M General EO Products Thematic EO Products Mission Specific EO Products Generic, widespread community Specific, tight community Other Thematic EO Products description … Other Specific Mission EO Products description SAR ATMALT LMBSSP...

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 14 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use TWG-OI current application schema ●Based on the Coverage concept (ISO 19123) ●Focused on image type (single, aggregated, mosaicked) ●Tight relationship with Elevation theme ●Core model to be extended by data providers ●No provenance or quality information in the model ●Metadata field not specified (type any)

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 15 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use TWG-OI data model UML diagram

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 16 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use EO-WCS – OI compatibility issues Compatibility issues: −Lack of explicit requirements to link OrthoimageCoverage to EarthObservation −Different cardinality of metadata field EO-WCS EO O&M metadata linked to EO coverage Metadata field cardinality (0,1) Orthoimagery Metadata within the product not specified. O&M is applicable according to guidelines. Metadata field cardinality (0,*)

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 17 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use TWG-OI data model modification ●[I-1] Modify the data model in order to have metadata field cardinality (0,1) and introduce the class OIMetadata to host Observation and other type of metadata fulfilling all the requirements ●Data producer can use the most suitable application profile of O&M ●Other metadata can be also used ●Limited changes to the current model ●[I-2] Include Orthoimagery to the list of themes for which O&M is relevant contained in the guidelines

TWG-OI status report | Antonio Romeo | ESRIN | 15/02/2012 | EOP-GSR | Slide 18 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Conclusions ●Identification of 4 EO user requirements ●Requirements implementation in line with INSPIRE guidelines ●Requirements implementation proposals: −[I-1] Insert OIMetadata in the application schema −[I-2] Insert Orthoimagery among the themes for which O&M is relevant but not core in the guidelines (D 2.9)
