Unit Promote Children’s Welfare and Well-being in the Early Years Unit aim This is a unit that is focused on children’s welfare and well-being. It assesses the learner’s ability to provide basic care in a hygienic environment. It includes understanding nutritional needs and the promotion of health and well-being. Learning outcomes 1. Understand the welfare requirements of the relevant early years framework 2. Be able to keep early years children safe in the work setting 3. Understand the importance of promoting positive health and well -being for early years children 4. Be able to support hygiene and prevention of cross infection in the early years setting 5. Understand how to ensure children in their early years receive high quality, balanced nutrition to meet their growth and development needs 6. Be able to provide physical care for children

Regulatory framework The Early Years Foundation Stage provides statutory guidance, which childcare settings must follow. In the new 2012 revision these are spread out through 3 books Assessment criteria 1.1 Identify and record the key information covered over the three books; Assessment criteria 1.2 Explain the staffing employment structure of your setting, and the lines of reporting & responsibility Worksheet 5, Unit 066 – 1.1, 1.2

Healthy Living Project This project will cover a large number of assessment criteria and it is important you ensure the criteria have been covered sufficiently. Design a booklet that could be used by parents/carers discussing children’s welfare and well-being, basic dietary requirements which includes providing for the physical and nutritional needs of babies and young people. This project should demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding relating to these elements: You will need to include: Discuss how to provide respectful physical care of babies and young children for: Hair Skin Teeth Nappy area Include how you would take into account the preferences of carers and why this is important. Include a daily and weekly routine for babies and young children that support their health and development, including information on toilet training. Why physical exercise and activity is important and also why periods of rest and quiet times are needed.

Healthy Living Project (cont) Include an explanation of nutritional needs of babies until they are fully weaned and a plan to support this. How to prepare formula explaining and the different types of formulas that are commonly available. Produce an appropriate menu for the day. Include breakfast, lunch and dinner and any snacks and drinks needed during the day. (Remember that children have different dietary needs at different ages. You may need to carry out some research to check each child has the appropriate balance of nutrients.) Include ways you could educate children and adults in food management. Use the headings ‘portion control’, ‘food phobias’, ‘underweight/overweight children’ and show 2/3 ideas for each one. Explain why it is important to follow carer’s instructions in respect of their child’s food allergies and intolerances and complete the following table to show an understanding of common dietary requirements.
