SEN Information Report ‘A Parent Friendly Approach’ Pomphlett Primary School

The principles underpinning the Information Report highlight that every child should be given the best chance to succeed in life. It is designed to share information, advice and support with you about our happy school, where dedicated staff, governors and parents provide a stimulating and challenging learning environment which helps our children to thrive. Pomphlett Primary School SEN Information Report

Identifying children with SEN and assessing their needs is of high importance at Pomphlett Primary school. We monitor the progress of all pupils and ensure that they all have access to good quality teaching which takes account of their differing needs and learning styles. We use a range of assessments and appropriate checklists of information to identify needs so that provision is then more personalised and meaningful for each pupil. All teachers are able to recognise the amount of progress pupils make and review their needs accordingly. As a school, we are adaptable in modifying teaching approaches and resources as part of a differentiated curriculum, providing effective classroom strategies and so removing any barriers to learning. Assessing the progress of all pupils

We have a range of resources and facilities here at Pomphlett Primary to support all children in their learning journey. The following link will clarify the provision our school makes to meet the diverse needs of each individual. http://www.plymouthparentpartnership.org.uk/resourc es/files/a4_inclusion_book.pdf The accessible school environment

Our school values instil that every child has the right to ‘be happy and safe’, ‘healthy and well’, ‘achieve and enjoy’ and ‘have a secure future’. This is supported by;  Valuing and promoting the full potential of each child  Encouraging the children to succeed and reach their learning goals  Providing an environment that allows them to access all areas of learning  Creating an ethos where pupils can achieve their aspirations. The school’s approach to Special Educational Needs

At Pomphlett Primary School, a supportive SEN team has been developed and, as a team, we endeavour to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has Special Educational Needs.  Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator – Miss Louise Galloway As a SENCO I am responsible for the SEN policy and co-ordination of specific provision and support for individual pupils. I will provide guidance to staff, colleagues, parents, carers and other agencies to ensure all pupils receive appropriate support and high quality teaching.  Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant – Mrs Jo Hurst  Learning Mentor – Mrs Rachael Cameron  Parent Support Advisor – Mrs Helen Burrows  SEN Governor – Mrs Helen Connett The school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator

If you feel your child may need additional support with their learning, please discuss this in the first instance with your child’s teacher or contact us to make an appointment to see Miss Galloway. 8 High priority is placed on teachers and staff continuing their professional development so that all staff are equipped to deal with a diverse range of needs. Staff training, development and support are planned accordingly to ensure all staff, both teachers and non-teachers, have knowledge ofthe four areas of need and the difficulties within each area. The SENCO has achieved the National Award for Special Educational Needs and has sufficient designated time to fulfil the role adequately and provide and attend training where appropriate. Within the Key Stage 1 Team, staff have been trained in using the BLAST programme, Colourful Semantics, Early Literacy Support, ELKLAN and Precision Teaching. In Key Stage 2 staff training has included Precision Teaching, Additional Literacy Support, ELSA, Letters and Sounds programme, Rapid Reading and Springboard. Staff Training and Expertise

Across Plymouth, all schools believe that, ‘Working together produces POSITIVE outcomes’. With the SEN Code of Practice ( 2014 ) firmly in place, we endeavour to work with Education, Health and Social Care to provide a coordinated approach for all children with SEN. Prevention, early identification and recognition can then support all children transferring between each phase of their education and prepare them for adulthood in the future. Multi-Agency Support

Additional advice and support can also be obtained from the following services, please use the link below to display the contact information. http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/senco_useful_contact_info_eotas.pd f Additional advice and support

Views of Parents/Carers We believe in a family centred approach, therefore you will always be involved in discussions and decisions about all aspects of SEN relating to your child. Remember you can always contact the SEN Co-ordinator to share your views and opinions. Views of Children We always start with the individual and take into account their wishes and aspirations, the outcomes they seek and the support they need to achieve their potential. From September 2014, we will introduce ‘Person Centred Planning’ to focus on their individual learning journeys, involving them in their education. Views of parents/carers and children

When parents or carers have concerns that the school’s provision for their child is not what they would expect it to be, they should follow the school’s complaints procedure. This involves them asking to see the child’s class teacher in the first instance to try and resolve the issue informally. Should they continue to be dissatisfied, they should follow the full procedure which is available on the school’s website: follow the link below: http://pomphlettprimary.com/keyinfo_detail.asp?Section=3&Ref=315 Sharing concerns

The Local Authority have published a Local Offer explaining the provision for children and young people with SEN in Plymouth.
