Everyone at the setting has a role to play in relation to health and safety policies and procedures.
All practitioners need to be aware of all policies and procedures within the setting.
There will be designated people for specific roles such as first aid, safeguarding and fire drills.

Maintaining a healthy and safe environment
Risk assessments will be carried out on a regular basis, according to the policies of the setting.
Practitioners will be continually risk assessing the area they are in so as to ensure the children are safe at all times.
Section 3 of the 2012 EYFS lays out the safeguarding and welfare requirements for all settings.
3.2 of section 3 states; Providers must take all necessary steps to keep children safe and well.
3.44 of section 3 states; The provider must promote the good health of children attending the setting.

As previously stated the revised EYFS is divided in to sections and Section 3 is dedicated to the safeguarding and welfare requirements. This section has sub-headings including:

Safety.

The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control
There are a number of ways that infections can be passed from one person to another. It is important for the practitioner to minimise any spread of infection.
Hand washing – It is important to wash hands before preparing food, after a visit to the toilet, after any messy activity. The practitioner needs to learn the correct technique for hand washing.
Food hygiene – A practitioner should take a course in food hygiene if they are preparing food, to ensure that they are safe with food.

The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control
Dealing with spillages – Practitioners should be aware of the setting’s policies and procedures and clean all spillages up immediately.
Safe disposal of waste – Ensure that you know the procedures for disposing of bodily waste in your setting. It is important that you dispose of it correctly in order to avoid any contamination – don’t forget to wash your hands after you have done this.
Correct personal protective equipment – Be aware of what protective equipment is available for you to use. You may need to use gloves when dealing with blood or changing nappies. You will need to use an apron when preparing food.
