HOW CAN YOU EARN COLLEGE CREDIT WITHOUT LEAVING CAMPUS?

Advanced Placement (AP) AP® courses are college-level courses offered in high school Courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses Students take AP Exams at the end of the course, measuring their mastery of college-level work A score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam can typically earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college

Our AP Courses Arts: Studio Art English: English Language and Composition and English Literature and Composition History and Social Sciences: Human Geography, Psychology, United States Government and Politics, United States History, and World History Mathematics and Computer Science: Calculus AB and Statistics Sciences: Biology and Environmental Science World languages: Spanish Language and Culture

AP at Calhoun High School We administered 461 exams in 2015 We had 32 AP Scholars named in 2015 AP Scholars demonstrate superior college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. They receive an award certificate, and this achievement is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges the following fall CHS was named an AP Humanities School by the GADOE AP Humanities Schools are schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social science courses, one fine arts course and one world language course

AP Myths & Realities MYTHSREALITIES AP courses are for students who always get good grades AP courses are for any students who are academically prepared and motivated to take college level courses AP courses are too stressfulIt’s no secret that AP courses are challenging. But, the support you receive from your classmates and teachers can help you manage the work load I don’t think I will score high enough on the AP exam to get college credit You don’t need to score a 5. Many colleges grant credit – and placement as well – based on a 3 or higher on an AP exam Taking AP courses could hurt my GPATaking AP courses shows colleges that you’re willing to challenge yourself academically. You will also earn quality point for completing an AP course I can’t take AP because no one has recommended me If you think you’re ready for an AP course, just talk to a teacher or counselor

CHS offers support for AP O These resources and programs support our AP students: O 5 th period AP remediation/acceleration O Individual teacher tutorials (before/after school) O AP Remind 101 services. Make sure you sign up for individual class reminders AND the Coordinator’s reminders

LET’S LOOK AT THE MOWR PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE CLASSES WITH A LOCAL COLLEGE (SB 132 & 2)

SB 132 – Move On When Ready (MOWR) Program O High school students may enroll while in 9 th – 12 th grades O Earn dual credit O Wide range of courses O Courses taught on either the high school or college campuses O Qualified high school educators can teach both high school and college courses O Program available year round, including summer term!

SB 2 – New High School Graduation Option O Students complete at least the following state required high school courses or their equivalent: O 1 required health and 1 PE course O 2 English O 2 math O 2 science O 2 social studies O (any associated End of Course (EOC) tests for each) O Complete an Associate Degree, Technical Diploma or two Technical Certificate programs in a career pathway and all training prerequisites for any state, national, or industry occupational certifications or licenses required to work in the field O Awarded a high school diploma and a college credential(s)

MOWR Eligible Students O Enrolled at a participating high school O Sign an advisement form with the high school O Available during all four years of high school enrollment (9 th -12 th ) O NO residency requirement O Meet admissions requirements and deadlines at participating college O May attend more than one postsecondary institution at a time O Maintain satisfactory academic progress at college

What does this cost? O No charges for classes! O The postsecondary institution must provide the required book(s) for the enrolled course(s) of the MOWR student at no cost O Postsecondary Institutions may charge for a lost or damaged book owned by the institution - Lost or damaged book charged to the student – the cost of the book minus the book allowance amount or $75 whichever is less

MOWR Course Options Approved courses include: O Degree level and non-degree level O Core courses in English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language O Career, technical, agricultural and elective courses O Online and transient courses Program available all four years of high school Program available year round, including Summer Term

HOPE, Zell Miller, HOPE Grant O HOPE Scholarship – 3.0 academic GPA O Zell Miller Scholarship – 3.7 academic GPA and 1200 SAT or 26 ACT in one sitting before graduation O HOPE Grant – technical colleges

MOWR - HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships O Core courses are included in the student’s HOPE high school GPA for HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship eligibility determinations O Core coursework taken as dual enrollment meets Academic Rigor requirements and are given a weight of 0.5 O College transcript begins as a MOWR student O MOWR hours DO NOT count towards HOPE hour cap

MOWR Eligible Postsecondary Institutions O Admissions requirements do not have to be the same as those for traditional freshmen O Institutions may determine programs/majors and courses to be offered for MOWR

GRADES and CREDITS O Students receive one full credit for a 3-credit hour college course O College transcripts include a letter grade; our college partners send us a numeric grade for CHS transcript O College courses have 5 bonus points added to final grade (for high school transcript only) O GSFC removes the 5 bonus points for calculation of initial HOPE eligibility (.5 is added back)

A FEW OF THE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Full-time or Part-time? O It’s a matter of preference O Many students fit college classes into their schedule while still taking other CHS classes, while others are truly ready to “Move On…” O If you are full-time, you are still allowed to participate in school sports, activities, dances, etc. However, you need to communicate with your coach or sponsor to be sure about what you need to participate!

Impact on HOPE? O The HOPE & Zell Miller scholarships will only pay for a maximum of 127 semester hours (or 190 quarter hours) O MOWR courses DO NOT count against your student’s HOPE cap O MOWR classes WILL factor into your HOPE and Zell Miller high school GPA

Transportation? O Most of our college courses are either taught at CHS on campus or are online through GNTC O Area colleges – courses O Certificate and Diploma programs will be offered at the college location (GNTC)
