Agenda Explanation of SOL tests Test Taking Tips Sample Questions Q & A

Explanation of SOL Tests Standards of Learning were created by the State of Virginia to standardize what is being taught to students across the state SOL tests were designed to assess and monitor how students are meeting those teaching objectives Given across the state to students in grades 3,4,5,6,8, and subject specific in high school

Computer Adaptive Testing Beginning with the school year, online Grade 3 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) tests will use a technology called Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). A Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) is an assessment that is customized for every student based on how the student responds to the questions. This is in contrast to the traditional test in which all students who take a particular version of the test respond to the same test questions.

10 Test-Taking Tips for Students 1.Show all of your work and your thinking 2.Manage your time 3.Read directions carefully and highlight key words 4.Answer all of the test questions 5.Eliminate answer choices with the e-tool eliminator

10 Test-Taking Tips for Students 6.Read all of the answer choices 7.Don’t spend too much time on one question—skip it and come back, but make sure you answer everything when you are finished 8.Check over your answers TWICE 9.Be sure to get enough sleep and eat a good hardy breakfast.

10 Test-Taking Tips for Students 10. Remember that tests give you opportunities to show what you know!

All third graders will take a test in the following areas… Reading – they will take the reading test over two days. Math – this will also be tested over two separate days.
