2. End of Grade Reading and Math tests are coming soon! Regular testing will take place on May 15-17 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) Tuesday, May 15th will be Reading EOG Wednesday, May 16th will be Math EOG (calculator active) Thursday, May 17th will be Math EOG (calculator inactive)

3. What should your child expect? EOG Reading is made up of 8 reading selections and 58 questions. The selections include fiction, nonfiction, consumer, and content texts. http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/eog/sam pleitems/reading

4. Feeling nervous for your child? We have worked hard all year to help them prepare, both for 4th grade and for EOG testing. As part of our Language Arts instruction, we have focused on these areas of reading comprehension: ·main idea ·supporting facts and details ·sequence of events ·cause and effect ·compare and contrast ·predict and draw conclusions ·make inferences ·word meaning in context ·realism versus fantasy ·fact and opinion ·figurative language

5. We also have worked to help students be smart test takers! We ask them to use the UNRAAVEL strategy with each reading selection to help them find the answers. · Underline the title (read the title to help with main idea and prediction) ·Now predict the passage (use the title, any pictures, charts, or graphs) ·Run through and number the paragraphs (helps students to later locate information in a specfic part of the text) ·Are the important words circled or underlined (words in bold print, italics, underlined, or in parentheses)? ·Are you reading the questions? (reading the questions first helps readers understand what information they are looking for and what is important in the text) ·Venture through and read the selection (students are encouraged to underline sentences that will help answer questions) ·Eliminate wrong answers (this makes it easier for students to determine correct answers) ·Let the correct answers be proved (show the right answer in the selection--it is underlined and you can "put your finger on" the sentence that has the proof.

6. In addition, we work on evaluating question types: ·Is the question a "right there" question? (I can find the answer in at least one specific sentence) ·Is the question a "think and search" question? (I can find clues to the answer, but I have to look in more than one place and the answer needs to make sense "in real life") ·Is the question an "on my own" question? (I have some information from the text, but I have to draw a conclusion or make a prediction about what happens next or why something happened) Your child's success with AR this year will also benefit them during EOG. The independent reading and increased text difficulty has exposed them to many new vocabulary words, genres, and styles of writing. For those who are successful chapter book reader, they have the reading stamina to sit for an extended period of time and tackle the variety of texts on EOG Reading.

7. What can you do to help in these last few weeks? Plenty!! · Continue to encourage independent reading of AR books ·Ask questions about books, homework assignments, recipes, magazines--almost anything! ·Make sure your child knows that you have confidence in their abilities ·When checking homework, ask students to explain how they proved their answers ·If you have the time, we will give you some additional resources to work with at home

8. Math EOG: Two parts tested over two days · Wednesday: Calculator active--students are allowed and encouraged to use calculators to check their work ·Thursday: Calculator inactive--no calculators; paper and pencil only Calculator active consists of 54 questions and Calculator inactive has 28 questions http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing /eog/sampleitems/newcurmath3

9. Areas of focus for EOG Math: ·Number Sense and Operations: place value, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division ·Measurement: time, temperature, customary measurement and metric measurement (length, mass/weight, and capacity) ·Geometry: lines, angles, plane figures, solid figures, grids ·Data analysis and probability: graphs, line plots, tally charts, probability, combinations ·Algebra: numeric and geometric patterns, finding unknown numbers

10. We have been working hard with our students to develop strategies for solving word problems! 1. Read the problem and ALL of the answer choices 2. Underline key words to help understand what steps to take 3. Show all of your work (there is plenty of paper to work out problems) 4. Eliminate answers that cannot be right 5. Check your work for any mistakes (check with a calculator when possible) and see if your answer makes sense

11. What can you do to help your child with math as we get closer to EOG testing? Here are some ideas: ·Ask your child to show you their work and explain what they did to find the answer ·If your child does not understand the problem, have them read it to you and then break the problem into smaller steps ·Review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts whenever possible ·Ask your child to check their answer and see if makes sense AND see if they answered the question ·Make sure your child knows that you have confidence in their ability to solve the problem
