Trigg County Public Forum Nutrition and Physical Activity January 22, 2015

Rationale According to the 2014 Edition of America’s Health Rankings from United Health Foundation, Kentuckians are at or near the bottom of nearly every major health indicator, ranking as the 47 th least healthy state overall. Kentucky has the 2nd highest smoking rate in the nation. 46 th in adult obesity 48 th in heart attacks 48th in heart disease 50 th in preventable hospitalizations

Rationale Additionally only 46.8% of adults and 21.9% of children in Kentucky meet the physical activity guidelines on 1hour of moderate physical activity every day. Promoting healthy and safe behaviors among students is an important part of the fundamental mission of schools. Improving student health and safety can –Increase students’ capacity to learn, –Reduce absenteeism, and –Improve physical fitness and mental alertness.

Process August 2014 First meeting of the District Wellness Committee –District committee reviewed regulations, reviewed previous years report card and recommendations, discussed next steps. –District Committee reviewed Program Review for Practical Living/Career Studies Demonstrator 1 Health Education Demonstrator 2 Physical Education Demonstrator 1 Opportunities –District Committee reviewed Comprehensive Physical Education/Physical Activity Continuum to increase the quality of the physical education instruction as well as increase physical activity opportunities throughout the school environment.

Process Continued September 2014 »Each school committee completed a Healthy Schools Program Inventory Framework that identified areas of successes and areas of improvements around: –Policy/Systems –Health Education –Physical Education –School Meals –Competitive Food and Beverages –Employee Wellness –Student Wellness

Process Continued November 2014 District Wellness Committee convened and reviewed each schools’ Healthy Schools Inventory. Each school shared evidences with the District Committee around Program Review for Practical Living/Career Studies Demonstrator 1 Health Education Demonstrator 2 Physical Education Demonstrator 1 Opportunities Nutrition and Physical Activity Report Card data was reviewed and then posted on the district website

Process Continued December 2014 District Wellness Committee convened and reviewed the Nutrition and Physical Activity Report Card data Each School Wellness Committee made recommendations to improve school nutrition and physical activity to be included into the District Wellness Report Board of Education reviewed Nutrition and Physical Activity report Card
