6 School Health Profiles Overview  Survey developed by the CDC to capture school health policies and programs  Conducted in secondary schools, grades 6-12  Conducted in the Spring biennially (even years) since 1996  Consists of 2 surveys: 1) Principal, 2) Lead Health Education Teacher  Arizona began participating in 2002 (6 iterations to date) Visit: www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/profileswww.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/profiles Profiles Monitors : School health education requirements and content Physical education requirements School Health policies related to HIV infection/AIDS, tobacco-use prevention, and nutrition Asthma management activities Family & community involvement in school health programs

7 Santa Cruz County 2011 School Health Profile  Conducted for the first time in Santa Cruz County, Fall of 2011  SCCAWN collaborated directory with schools to complete Profiles  Goal: all schools participate (i.e. a “census” sample)  Survey distributed to 19 schools serving grades 6-12  Response rate:  16 schools completed Principal Survey = 84%  10 schools completed Lead Health Education Teacher = 53% Principal Survey (n=16)  9 traditional schools (56%)  4 ‘other’* (25%)  3 charter (19%)  Participating schools serve 96% of SCC students in grades 6-12 *parochial, vocational, alternative Teacher Survey (n=10)  Of the 9 schools not participating, 4 indicated they did not have a lead health education teacher.  Participating schools serve 88% of SCC students in grades 6-12

21 School Improvement Plan Found on page 13 of Santa Cruz County Report…. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act requires certain schools to have a written School Improvement Plan (SIP). Many states and school districts also require schools to have a written SIP. Five of the 16 Santa Cruz County secondary schools reported having no written SIP. 23 Summary and Discussion  The 2011 Santa Cruz County School Health Profile utilized the CDC 2010 survey  The SCC report is a (very) abbreviated replica of the CDC 2010 report  The SCC report contains SCC / AZ / US data for the Principal survey only, and only presents Health Teacher survey results to questions to which all 10 schools responded.  Profile results may be used to guide school / community partners in identifying priorities  The survey itself can be used as an educational tool, as it addresses best practices in school health  If conducted again, schools may want some technical assistance with interpretation of questions, and collaboration with other teachers on finding accurate responses.  The definition of “Lead Health Education Teacher” may lead schools to think the survey is not appropriate for their school.  That some schools were K-8, with only 2 ‘adolescent’ grade levels may explain poorer results for some topic (sensitive) areas
