2 Rationale According to the 2012 Edition of America’s Health Rankings from United Health Foundation, Kentuckians are at or near the bottom of nearly every major health indicator, ranking as the 44 th least healthy state overall. Kentucky has the highest smoking rate in the nation. 40 th in adult obesity. 41 st in adult diabetes 43 rd in cardiovascular deaths 50 th in preventable hospitalizations

3 Rationale Continued Promoting healthy and safe behaviors among students is an important part of the fundamental mission of schools, which is to provide young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become healthy and productive adults. Improving student health and safety can –Increase students’ capacity to learn, –Reduce absenteeism, and –Improve physical fitness and mental alertness.

5 Process August 2013 First meeting of the District Wellness Committee –District committee reviewed regulations, reviewed previous years report card and recommendations, discussed next steps. –District Committee reviewed Program Review for Practical Living/Career Studies Demonstrator 1 Health Education Demonstrator 2 Physical Education Demonstrator 1 Opportunities –District Committee reviewed Comprehensive Physical Education/Physical Activity Continuum to increase the quality of the physical education instruction as well as increase physical activity opportunities throughout the school environment.

6 Process Continued September 2013 »Each school committee completed a Healthy Schools Program Inventory Framework that identified areas of successes and areas of improvements around: –Policy/Systems –Health Education –Physical Education –School Meals –Competitive Food and Beverages –Employee Wellness –Student Wellness

7 Process Continued November 2013 District Wellness Committee Convened and reviewed each schools’ Healthy Schools Inventory. Each school shared evidences with the District Committee around Program Review for Practical Living/Career Studies Demonstrator 1 Health Education Demonstrator 2 Physical Education Demonstrator 1 Opportunities Nutrition and Physical Activity Report Card data was reviewed
