3 Mission Statement: Mission Statement: The Council will bring together individuals to address issues affecting the health of our children, youth, and families. Within a framework of risk factors identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Council will act as a liaison between the School Health program and the Lower Merion community. Through the cooperative effort of members, the council will identify risk factors, establish priorities, make recommendations, and provide leadership in health promotion activities. 4 What Is A School Health Council? An advisory body comprised of faculty and staff: Educators, administrators, counselors, nurses and nutrition services In collaboration with : Parents, students, members of community health agencies, local businesses and interested community members

6 The Role of a School Health Council  Provide support for health-related activities to reduce the targeted CDC risk behaviors  Promote adoption of health-enhancing school policies  Support selection, writing and revision of health curriculum  Assist individual schools to identify health needs  Support school health activities (health fairs, workshops)  Develop advocacy activities  Conduct assessments to determine needs and resources

7 Benefits of a School Health Council  Improve overall health education  Link schools with community health resources  Provide a means for improving school health policies and programs  Educate the community about the school and health issues  Increase parent and community involvement in the school
