1 Gonzales Unified School District Wellness Policy

2 What is the Wellness Policy and Why?
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 The Act requires each LEA participating in the National School Lunch Program or other federal Child Nutrition program to establish a local school wellness policy for all schools under its jurisdiction. Expanded scope of local school wellness policies Brings in additional stakeholders in its development Implementation and review Requires public update on the content and implementation of the wellness policies

3 What is the Wellness Committee?
The Wellness Committee is created to; 1. Strengthen, develop, implement, monitor and as necessary, revise all components of the Student Wellness Policy. 2. Serve as a resource to the District The District Wellness Committee will consist of a group of individual representatives or stakeholders, which MAY include, but not limited to: Student Nutrition Staff Teachers Health Professionals School Board Members Students Parents School Administrators Members of the Community

4 Section I: Nutritional Quality of Foods and Beverages Sold and/or Served on Campus
Foods sold or served to students by school are in compliance with local, state, and federal law. All food and beverage available to students on school premises from one-half hour before to one-half hour after the regular school day will meet or exceed nutritional standards established by local, state, and federal laws, regulations and guidelines. Qualified nutrition professionals will administer the school meal program. Schools will not allow students to share foods. Foods sold through vending machines, fundraisers, student stores, school events, celebrations, educational lessons, etc. shall be approved by nutrition supervisor. Each grade span (Elementary [K-4], Secondary [5-12]) has specific guidelines for food and beverages sold. Fundraising activities, snacks should involve foods that meet the nutrition and portion size standards AND must make a positive contribution to children’s diet and health. Rewards must meet nutritional requirements. Absolutely NO CANDY. School shall limit celebrations that involve food during the school day to no more than one party per class per month. Celebrations should occur after the last lunch period. School sponsored events outside of normal school day do not have to meet nutritional requirements.

5 Section II. Nutrition Education and Physical Activity Promotion and Food Marketing
GUSD aims to teach, encourage, and support healthy eating by students. GUSD should try and do this through nutrition education and promotion. GUSD should offer healthy eating seminars for parents/guardians, send home nutrition information, post nutrition tips on school website, and provide nutrient analyses of school menus. GUSD will provide information about physical education and other school-based physical activity opportunities for students. School-based marketing will be consistent with nutrition education and health promotion. GUSD will encourage activities and policies that support personal efforts by staff to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Staff will be encouraged to follow the nutritional guidelines. As part of health education, there are nutrition units that teach the importance of a well balanced diet. Currently, there is a nutrition link on our website where our new Food Service Director, Jeff Coats has posted some excellent nutrition educational information. GUSD provides PE at all grade levels, afterschool sports at the middle and high school levels, and afterschool enrichment activities as part of the Expanded Learning Program. In terms of marketing and health promotion, GUSD has eliminated all vending machines available to kids that had candy or soda. All vending machines available to students include machines with only foods and drinks that comply with Federal and State nutrition guidelines.
