The story so far … From 2013 there was no KS2 English Writing test. This was replaced by Teacher Assessment and a SPaG test. This year, Year 6 children will be assessed in this way. From 2016, Year 2 and Year 6 will take a GPaS test, which will also incorporate handwriting and vocabulary element.

Expectation by end of KS1 Sentences – different forms, expanded noun phrases, subordination, co-ordination, tenses, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, agreement, prefixes and suffixes Capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas in lists, apostrophes for contraction and possession Cap, pot, tree, swing, hoop, leaf, sock, cloud, apple, bench, time, like, one, turned, with, pavement, climbed, riding, stopped, children, know …

Punctuation Capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas (in lists and to mark clauses), direct speech, inverted commas, speech marks, apostrophes, brackets, dashes, colons, semi-colons, hyphens and bullet points.

Why use punctuation?

Why teach / learn punctuation It gives meaning to written words. Change the punctuation, change the meaning. A woman without her man is nothing. A woman, without her man, is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing.
