Changes in Assessment Levels are no more!

Key changes -  What are AGE Related Expectations (AREs)?  National curriculum 2014  We’ve broken down what the age related expectations are and have shred them on our website – www.middleton.derbyshire.sch.uk under the Useful Information & Assessment tab.www.middleton.derbyshire.sch.uk  Reading  Writing  Speaking and Listening  Maths  Science

How well is my child doing?  We assess what your child can do independently.  We focus on what they are secure and confident to do.  Commencing – your child is confident and secure with less than 30% of the statements.  Developing – your child is confident and secure with between 30% - 70% of the statements.  Secure – your child is secure and confident with between 70% - 80% of the statements.  Advanced – your child is secure and confident with between 80% - 90% of the statements.  Deep – your child is secure and confident in applying their knowledge of statements across all contexts.

Ongoing Assessment  Talk to the children about their learning.  Observe and ask questions to ascertain their understanding.  Do I know how to improve? Do children know if they are successful? What are their next steps in their learning?  Clear marking and feedback strategies.  Time for children to review their work and make improvements from teachers feedback. We call it ‘Fix it time’.  Understanding their learning against the expected AREs. (Targets for learning)

Early days ……..  This is the first year we have assessed using AREs, we do not have a data comparison.  We will work with other schools and the Local Authority to moderate our judgements.  We may well carry out end of year testing to help us to assess against the standards.

Assessment arrangements  In May Key Stage 1 children (Year 2) will sit: - English Reading - 2 papers - English, grammar, punctuation and spelling paper - Mathematics paper & arithmetic paper  The week of the 9 th of May Key Stage 2 children (Year 6) will sit: - English Reading paper - English, grammar, punctuation paper and spelling paper - 3 Mathematics papers (1 arithmetic & 2 mathematical reasoning papers) - 3 Science papers (biology, chemistry & physics – Science sampling)  The scale score of 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. However, due to the small differences in difficulty between tests, the ‘raw score’ (ie the total number of correct responses) that equates to 100 might be different (though similar) each year.  Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score on two different tests will have demonstrated the same attainment.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPaS)  Grammar, punctuation and spelling are key areas in the teaching of English.  Expectations of the National Curriculum have been heightened and children are now expected to have a good understanding of these areas and use correct terminology.  At the end of Year 2 and Year 6 children will sit a GPaS test.
