All About Citations! The Coolest English Scavenger Hunt You Will EVER Perform!

To Begin…  First, open a Word document.  At the top, write the title “Citation Scavenger Hunt” and your last name.  Every answer you find will be typed into this sheet. Make sure you save often!  Whenever you find an answer online, make sure you copy/paste the URL directly under it. If you do not, you will not receive credit!

Citations  Write “#1” on your Word document. Now, search for the following question: What is an MLA in-text citation? Find a definition and copy/paste it into your document. Remember the URL underneath the answer!

Works Cited Citations  Write “#2” on your document. Answer the following question: What is the difference between an MLA in-text citation and the works cited?  Also under #2, type out the format listed on your Creating a Works Cited/Bibliography handout.  Now, in the format you typed out, bold what goes FIRST in the in-text citation if you can find it.  Next, in the format, italicize what should go in the in-text citation if you cannot find your first preference.

Why do those things go into the in- text citation?  Now, write “#3” on your document. Explain what the connection is between what goes into the in-text citation and the works cited entry it belongs to.

Examples!!!  Write down “#4” on your document.  Find an example of an MLA in-text citation within a scholarly document. Copy/paste it after #4. Remember to give the URL underneath.  Scroll down (or find) the works cited page for that document. Find the works cited entry your copy/pasted citation refers to. Copy/paste it under your in-text citation.  Now, underneath all of that citation material, explain the connection between the in-text citation and the works cited entry.

Works Cited  Write “#5” on your document. Now, find an example of an MLA formatted works cited. Copy/paste the first 5 entries. Make sure your formatting matches the formatting on the website! (for instance: indentation, italicized information, etc.)  Underneath the copy/pasted works cited entries, list (in the same order as the works cited) the first letter of each entry.  Now, explain what the pattern is in a sentence. What order should your works cited be in?

Works Cited part two  Now, write “#6” on your document. Search for a tutorial on “how to create hanging indents in Word”. Watch or read the information. Paste the website URL onto the document for #6, then paraphrase what a hanging indent looks like.

Quotations  “#7” is the next thing you’re writing down.  Search for a definition of “paraphrasing”. After #7, paraphrase that information.  Search the question “Do I use an in text citation for paraphrased information in MLA format??” And then write down “yes” or “no” on your document.  Answer (with a “yes” or “no” on your document under #7) the question: Do I have to use an in-text citation for material that is quoted?

More Quotations  Download from Weebly (or pull up from your saved documents) the document “Using Quotes Correctly”  Under the next number (#8): Copy/paste the question “Should you use parts of a quote that do not prove your point or are unnecessary?”. After this question, write down a yes or no answer and then the number on the “Using Quotes Correctly” sheet that backs up this answer.

Even More Quotes!!  Copy/paste the question “Should you use a lead-in for every quote”  Next, write “yes” or “no” as your answer and the number from the sheet that backs your answer up.  Copy/paste the question “Should my lead-in make sense grammatically with the quote if I read it as a sentence?”  Next, write “yes” or “no” to answer and the number from the sheet that backs your answer up.
